BMW R 1300 GS Adventure: specifications, pros and cons, compatible accessories

Thirty-liter tank and a front end all its own
Same basis as the R 1300 GS, but with an exposed aluminum tank, reinforced rear subframe, and different windscreen. Most accessories are shared with the GS; the headlight protector, crash bars, and pannier racks instead have codes dedicated to the Adventure, all of which you'll find here.

Who it's recommended for
It's the right bike if
- You take long trips with two people and luggage, and want to stop planning refueling
- You spend many hours on the highway and need genuine aerodynamic protection
- You're looking for a chassis designed for the load, not adapted to it
- You like the look of the exposed aluminum tank
- You have the stature and experience to handle 269 kg fully loaded
Look elsewhere if
- You mainly use the bike in the city or on narrow roads
- You ride slowly off-road, where the weight becomes a serious physical burden
- You're shorter: the seat starts at 870 mm
- You want to spend less, both on the list price and on equipment
- You want a mature range of accessories with plenty of alternatives
In two words: it's the GS for riders who rack up the miles and don't want to compromise on range. If most of your trips are within 400 km per day, the R 1300 GS standard costs less, weighs 32 kg less, and is easier to handle everywhere.

Adventure-specific headlight protectionWarning: the GS version does not fit; the Adventure's front end is different. - 2
CHG151 upper crash bars25 mm 304 stainless steel, a code developed for the Adventure: the GS version does not fit. A stationary fall with 269 kg leaves a mark on the exposed aluminum tank, which here is part of the bike's styling. - 3
4 mm aluminum skid plateSix-point mounting. With this weight and travel capability, the boxer's crankcase is the first thing to hit a rock. - 4
Oversized kickstand plateAt 269 kg with a full 30-liter tank, it is almost essential. Two versions: mechanical or adaptive suspension. - 5
CGTBH151BK cylinder head protectionThe boxer cylinder heads protrude and make contact first. They mount to the bike's existing mounting points, without drilling, and also work on the GS. - 6
Barkbusters BHG-124 handguard kitTwo mounting points, developed for the 1300 platform: the same kit as for the GS, in black or aluminum, or BHG-133 with LED turn signals. - 7
CONQUEROR aluminum pannier cases, with framesPanniers, top case, and frames designed together for the Adventure: the complete touring solution, without searching for the right combination piece by piece. - 8
Adventure side pannier framesFor those who already have the pannier cases or prefer the Wanderer semi-rigid cases. The GS frames do not fit: the rear subframe is different. - 9
Larger windscreen433 × 432 mm versus the standard 370 × 335 mm, with 4 mm polycarbonate. On eight-hour stages, the difference is measured in helmet noise. - 10
D7 PRO auxiliary light kit with CANsmartAuxiliary lights, dedicated mounts for the Adventure, and controller in a single code: everything is controlled from the factory buttons, without cutting a wire.
The dedicated catalog does not end here. Protection: radiator grille, brake caliper guard with ABS sensor, 5-liter engine guard bags, and carbon radiator cover. Luggage: top case plate for the original luggage rack, version with rear frame, PIKE TRACKER aluminum top case, and 18-liter ALPS waterproof motorcycle bag. Frequently asked questions
Do the R 1300 GS accessories fit the Adventure?
Many do: the kickstand plate, risers, windscreen, Barkbusters handguard kit, skid plate, cylinder head protection, tank bags, and mirrors are shared. The headlight protection, crash bars, and pannier frames do not carry over, because the front end, subframe, and tank clearance are different: dedicated Adventure part numbers are available for these.
Which crash bar is needed for the Adventure?
The CHG151, made of 25 mm 304 stainless steel and designed for the 30-liter tank. The standard GS's CHG131 does not fit. On the Adventure, the crash bar matters more than elsewhere: the exposed aluminum tank is part of the bike's appearance and is expensive to replace.
Is the Adventure or the standard GS the better choice?
The Adventure if you ride long stages and travel fully loaded: 30 liters and better aerodynamic protection make a difference throughout the day. The GS if you also use the bike in the city and on slow off-road sections, where 32 kg less is noticeable.
Which pannier system should I choose?
Three options. The aluminum CONQUEROR cases come complete with panniers, a top case, and frames, making them the most straightforward solution. The semi-rigid 40+40 Wanderer cases are available in a kit with frames and weigh less. If you already have the pannier cases, buy only the Adventure's side frames: those for the GS and 1250 do not fit.
Can the 1250 Adventure panniers be fitted?
The cases do, but not the frames. The 1300 Adventure has its own mounting points: you need the frames for its platform.
Does the magnetic tank bag stay on aluminum?
On the exposed aluminum tank, magnets do not grip as they do on steel: the mounting ring is required. It fits around the fuel cap and mechanically locks the bag in place.
