Who it is recommended for

It is the right bike if

  • You take long trips and want 500 km of range without thinking about it
  • You are looking for the best touring capability at a used-bike price, not a new-bike price
  • You often travel two-up with heavy luggage
  • You want the tubular engine guard included as standard, without adding it later
  • You are tall and fit enough to manage 268 kg and an 890 mm seat

Look elsewhere if

  • You also use it in the city or need to park it in tight spaces
  • You ride slow or technical off-road terrain, where the loaded weight is prohibitive
  • You are shorter: this is the GS with the highest seat
  • Your trips are under 350 km per day
  • You want the latest-generation electronics

In short: it is the best choice today for anyone who racks up miles and wants to spend wisely, because the arrival of the 1300 Adventure has lowered used prices, while the accessories are comprehensive and mature. If your trips are shorter, the R 1250 GS costs less, weighs twenty kilograms less, and has a seat that is forty millimeters lower.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Range that changes how you plan your stops
  • Tubular skid plate already standard on most configurations

  • Mature accessories at lower prices, as with the GS
  • Carries two people and luggage without becoming unsettled

Cons

  • 268 kg and a tall seat: not a motorcycle for everyone to maneuver
  • Wide tank that also spreads the legs apart
  • It becomes tiring in slow off-road riding
  • Higher fuel consumption when traveling with a full load
  • Bulk that makes everyday parking more difficult

Frequently asked questions

What is the real difference from the R 1250 GS?

A 30-liter tank versus 20, twenty extra kilos, a higher seat, and better aerodynamic protection. Mechanically, they are the same bike: the intended use changes, not the engine.

Can the GS pannier frames be fitted to the Adventure?

Yes. The frame we sell covers the R 1200 GS, R 1250 GS, and both Adventure models, with the dedicated ADV parts already included in the package. The top case plate is different, however, and this one has its own version. The pannier cases are the same everywhere.

Do I need a crash bar if I already have the standard engine guard?

The standard tubular bar protects the engine, not the 30-liter aluminum tank. The CHG082 tank crash bar covers that upper section specifically, and it's a code available only for the Adventure: it cannot be fitted to the standard GS.

Which handguards can be fitted?

The Barkbusters BHG-085 two-point kit for the R 1250 GS and GS Adventure, the same one needed for the F 750 GS and F 850 GS. The bar and guard are chosen separately, depending on how much you want to protect your hands from the wind.

Is it too heavy for off-road riding?

Not for fast off-road riding, but yes for slow, technical terrain: 268 kg fully loaded can only be managed with experience. If your use is mixed, the standard GS is easier to handle.

Is it worth buying one used today?

It's the best time: the 1300 Adventure has pushed prices down, and the range of accessories for the 1250 is complete and available at mature-market prices.
