Kawasaki KLR 650: specifications, pros and cons, compatible accessories

Adventure enduro · since 1987

The round-the-world single-cylinder, and the model with the most dedicated lighting we carry

Simple mechanics, a huge tank and a reputation built over thirty years of expeditions. The catalog we have for it is entirely DENALI and entirely electrical: twenty products covering auxiliary lights, horns, brake lights, indicators and wiring, largely plug and play. Dedicated protection and luggage for the KLR are not in the catalog.

Who it's recommended for

It's the right bike if

  • Range matters most to you: 23 liters on an economical single-cylinder means a huge number of miles
  • You want simple mechanics, repairable anywhere and without diagnostic electronics
  • You travel far and for a long time, on mixed surfaces, without rushing
  • You are willing to work on it: it is a bike to customize, not one that arrives finished
  • Auxiliary lighting is a priority: this model has an extensive catalog

Look elsewhere if

  • You are looking for performance: just under forty horsepower makes itself felt on highways and when overtaking
  • You want to buy protection and luggage here: we do not have a skid plate or dedicated frames for the KLR
  • You expect refined suspension: it is tuned to last, not to set lap times
  • You are under five feet nine: 870 mm of seat height on a tall, narrow bike is noticeable
  • Ordering without checking the year: mounts are not interchangeable between the 2008-2018 model and the series from 2022

In short: this is the low-cost expedition bike, not a bike to outfit with the catalog in hand. If you want the same use but with dedicated protection and luggage available, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 is the modern alternative; if a single-cylinder is enough but you want something lighter, the KTM 690 Enduro R plays in another off-road league.

What to install, in order of priority

On a motorcycle for long trips with stages that end after dark, lighting is the upgrade that makes the biggest difference. The kits already include auxiliary lights, mount, and harness: they are the easiest way to avoid choosing the wrong part.

The catalog is rounded out by the auxiliary light mount for installation on the upper crash bar, the mount for the front T3 indicators from 2022 onward with the corresponding front adapters and rear adapters, and individual wiring harnesses for DialDim and brake lights, useful for those who assemble the system piece by piece instead of starting with a kit.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have crash bars or pannier racks for the KLR 650?

No, and on an adventure bike it's worth saying this right away: for the KLR, our catalog covers lighting and electrical products only. If you need a crash bar, look elsewhere and then come back here for the auxiliary lights: the kit with clamps is specifically designed to mount them on a bar that is already in place.

Is a kit or individual parts better?

The kit, if you're starting from scratch: it contains auxiliary lights, the correct mount for your model year, and wiring, and costs less than the sum of the individual parts. Individual part numbers are for those who already have part of the system or want to add one device at a time.

What's the difference between D7 PRO and DL4?

The D7 PRO lights are more powerful, and the kit includes the DialDim controller to adjust the intensity; the DL4 lights are more compact and basic. On an adventure bike used for a lot of night riding, the former are preferable.

What does plug and play mean for these products?

That the wiring plugs into the motorcycle's original connectors, without cutting or splicing wires. This applies to brake lights, T3 indicators, and DialDim for the series from 2022 onward.

How do I know which auxiliary light mount I need?

From year. For the 2008-2018 KLR 650 E, there is a dedicated lower mount and upper mount; for the series from 2022 onward, there are different ones, plus the version that attaches to the upper crash bar.
