Who it is recommended for

It is the right motorcycle if

  • You are shorter: with the low seat, height is reduced to 770 mm
  • You want an easy GS to use in the city and on mixed roads without effort
  • You are moving up from a mid-size bike and do not want an intimidating motorcycle
  • You are looking for the lowest setup cost in the BMW range
  • You ride on roads and gravel roads, not technical off-road terrain

Look elsewhere if

  • You are looking for serious off-road riding: the 19-inch wheel and conventional fork are limiting
  • You often travel two-up with luggage: 77 hp is noticeable on the highway
  • You need more than 300 km of range
  • You want adjustable suspension without aftermarket modifications
  • You plan to reuse accessories from an F 850: not all of them fit

In short: it is the easiest GS to ride and own, and the right choice when a low seat matters more than off-road ability. If you are looking for a 21-inch wheel and genuine off-road use, the F 850 GS is the sister model to consider; if you need long-distance range, the F 850 GS Adventure increases the tank capacity to 23 liters.

What to fit, in order of priority

On a 224 kg motorcycle used in the city and on mixed roads, the worthwhile spending is what prevents damage from dropping it at a standstill and makes loading convenient.

The collection also includes 23 mm handlebar risers with 20 mm rearward offset, oversized footpegs, mirrors with adapters for BMW threading, PIKE TRACKER aluminum panniers and a matching top case, an 18-liter ALPS waterproof bag, Eazi-Grip instrument protection, a CANsmart GEN II controller with a multi-model auxiliary light adapter, and a motorcycle cover.

Frequently asked questions

F 750 GS or F 850 GS: which should you choose?

The 750 if a low seat and easy handling matter more than off-road riding: its 19-inch wheel and 77 hp make it more manageable in the city and on twisty roads. The 850 if you’re looking for a 21-inch wheel and more serious off-road use.

Do the F 850 accessories fit?

To a large extent, yes — crash bars, pannier frames, handguard kit, navigation mount, top-case plate, mirrors, and bags — but not the kickstand plate, because the 750’s chassis is lower. Always check the part number.

LOBOO handguards or Barkbusters kit: what’s the difference?

The LOBOO handguards arrive complete, with the bar, shell, and deflector already included: just install them. The Barkbusters BHG-085, on the other hand, is only the mounting kit, to which the separately chosen bar and shell must be added. It costs more and requires two orders, but lets you decide how much protection to provide for your hands.

Is it suitable for a long trip?

Yes, with the limitation of the 15-liter tank. With light luggage and 250 km stages, it’s a comfortable companion; for true range, you need the 850 Adventure or a boxer.

Which kickstand plate is needed?

The one from the F 750 / F 800 family, which also fits the F 900 GS Comfort. The standard F 900 GS plate does not fit, however.

How much does it cost to get it travel-ready?

It’s the most affordable BMW to equip alongside the F 850. With handguards, crash bars, a kickstand plate, a tank bag, and rear bags, it’s ready without spending too much.
