The mid-size BMW that stopped pretending

Fourteen kilos lighter than the F 850 GS it replaces, with a plastic tank, longer-travel suspension, and a 21-inch front wheel. It's the first F explicitly built for dirt, not for the road with an enduro look.105 hp

Who it's recommended for

  • It's the right bike if
  • You ride serious dirt and want a 21-inch wheel without moving up in engine size
  • You're looking for a touring bike that costs about half as much as a boxer, accessories included
  • You prefer a chain to shaft drive for lightness and roadside repairability
  • You're coming from an F 850 GS and want fourteen kilos less

Your stages are within 300 km between fuel stops

  • Look elsewhere if
  • You do a lot of highway riding: 14.5 liters runs out quickly
  • You're shorter: the seat is tall and narrow
  • You want a complete accessories catalog with plenty of alternatives
  • You don't want to deal with chain maintenance

You often travel two-up with heavy luggage

In a nutshell: this is the right BMW for anyone who wants to do real off-roading without the weight and cost of a boxer GS. If the limitation you feel is range, the F 900 GS Adventure increases the tank to 23 liters while retaining the same platform; if you want more road comfort and less off-road focus, a used F 850 GS remains a valid choice.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fourteen kilos lighter than the F 850 GS
  • 21-inch wheel and suspension with genuinely long travel
  • Fuller, more responsive engine at low revs
  • Equipping it costs about half as much as an R 1300 GS
  • Chain instead of shaft drive: lighter and easier to repair on the road

Cons

  • 14.5-liter tank: range is the real limitation
  • Tall, narrow seat, not for everyone to reach the ground
  • The accessories catalog is still under construction
  • The Comfort version has a different kickstand foot: pay attention when purchasing
  • Chain to maintain, unlike boxers

What to install, in order of priority

On a bike designed for dirt roads, protection comes before luggage.

The tank bag requires a mounting ring, because magnets alone won't hold on plastic: from there, choose the size from the magnetic bags from 2.5 to 10 liters. There's also the motorcycle cover for those who keep their bike outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

Do F 850 GS accessories fit the F 900 GS?

Some do, others don't. Risers, aluminium handguards, mirrors and tank bags move over; the side-stand plate, pannier frames, luggage rack, Barkbusters handguard kit and tank stickers are specific because the stand foot, subframe, handlebar and tank shape change.

Which side-stand plate do I need?

The CJC025 code for the F 900 GS from 2024 onward. Note the Comfort version, which has a different foot: in that case, you need the plate from the F 750 / F 800 family, also available in the collection.

I've fitted the riser: does it change anything for the handguards?

Yes, and it's the most common ordering mistake on this bike. With handlebar risers, the correct Barkbusters kit is the BHG-115, not the BHG-118 for the standard bike: the mounting point is different. If you buy risers and handguards together, get the BHG-115.

How do I mount the pannier cases?

Two options. The JP025B side frames, if you already have the pannier cases, or the 35+30-litre aluminium kit, which comes with the frames already matched. For the top case, there's the enlarged rear luggage rack, which includes the mounting plate.

Is the 14.5-litre tank a problem?

It depends on how you travel. In mixed riding, it does about 300 km; less on the motorway. If you ride long stages, the F 900 GS Adventure with 23 litres is the more sensible choice.

How much does it cost to equip it for a trip?

About half the price of an R 1300 GS. It's the main reason many people choose this bike over the boxer: the final bill, bike plus accessories, remains far lower.
