Everything you need to know before ordering

Compatibility, included items, installation, and documents: below is every detail verified against the official Barkbusters documentation.

Description Barkbusters BHG-050 handguard mounting kit for BMW R1200GS, R1200R and S1000XR

The BHG-050 is the specific mounting kit for five BMW models: a heat-treated aluminum bar, clamps, and hardware. It is the structure only, without plastics.

Stated compatibility

Model Years
BMW R1200GS from 2013 to 2017 — closed range
BMW R1200GS Adventure from 2014
BMW R1200R from 2015
BMW R1250R from 2019
BMW S1000XR from 2015

Compatibility is stated for motorcycles in original factory configuration.

Two pitfalls to avoid

  • The R1250R is compatible, but the R1250GS is not. They are two different motorcycles with different handlebars: the R1250GS requires the BHG-085.
  • The R1200GS ends at 2017, while the GS Adventure continues beyond that. The ranges for the two models do not coincide.

Impact protection

Two mounting points and heat-treated aluminum. Barkbusters states that this configuration is designed for impact protection: this is the substantial difference compared with the original handguards, which are mainly designed to protect against wind.

Plastics are NOT included

Plastic Character
JET-003 Compact profile, more airflow to the hand
VPS-203 Adjustable wind deflector: adventure and touring
STM-003 Most extensive coverage in the range: road riding and cold weather
BCF-003 Real carbon fiber

EGO plastics are not compatible.

What you will find in the package

  • Two heat-treated aluminum bars, natural finish.
  • Clamps and complete hardware.

What is NOT included

  • Protective plastics, to be chosen from JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON.

Why choose it
  • Protezione dagli impatti dichiarata.
  • Quattro plastiche compatibili. JET, VPS, STORM e CARBON, intercambiabili negli anni sulla stessa struttura.
  • Prodotto in Australia.
Who is it recommended for

Assembly and documents

  4. Fissa la barra in alluminio all estremità del manubrio e al morsetto, poi portala in posizione.

R1250R yes, R1250GS no

  • Two different motorcycles with different handlebars. The BHG-085 is needed for the R1250GS.
Check the year, not just the model

Check the year, not just the model

For this code, the ranges do not match across the models: the R1200GS is covered from 2013 to 2017, while the GS Adventure is covered from 2014 onward with no end limit. And there is a misleading pair: the R1250R is compatible, but the R1250GS is not, because they are two motorcycles with different handlebars.

FAQs

For more information, see our FAQ of frequently asked questions.

Which motorcycles does it fit?

For five BMW models: R1200GS from 2013 to 2017, R1200GS Adventure from 2014, R1200R from 2015, R1250R from 2019, and S1000XR from 2015.

I have an R1250GS: the R1250R is compatible, so is mine too?

No, and it’s an easy mistake to make: the R1250R and R1250GS are two different motorcycles with different handlebars. The R1250R is compatible with this kit; the R1250GS is not. The BHG-085 is required for the R1250GS.

I have a 2012 R1200GS: will it fit?

No. This code covers the R1200GS from 2013 to 2017: it is a closed range, not an open-ended one. For model years up to 2012, the code is different. Write to us with the exact year and we’ll tell you the right one.

I have an R1200GS Adventure: which years does it cover?

From 2014 onward. Be careful because the year ranges for the GS and the GS Adventure are different: the GS stops at 2017, but the Adventure does not.

Does it also fit the S1000XR?

Yes, the manufacturer has listed it from 2015 onward. This information often doesn’t appear on retailers’ product pages because the S1000XR isn’t an off-road motorcycle; but on a touring motorcycle, handguards are useful even just for wind protection and shielding the lever.

Are the protective plastic parts included?

No. The BHG-050 is the mounting structure only: aluminum bars, clamps, and hardware. The plastic components are selected and purchased separately.

What plastics can I install on it?

Four series: JET with a compact profile, VPS with an adjustable deflector, STORM with extended coverage, and CARBON in fiber. EGO plastics are not compatible.

Does it protect the lever in a fall?

Yes. It has two attachment points, and the manufacturer states that heat treatment of the aluminum is intended to add strength and protection against impacts.

What finish does it have?

Natural aluminum. The official code is BHG-050-NP, and the manufacturer does not offer a black-painted version of this kit.

Do I need to remove the original handguards?

Yes, the kit takes their place on the handlebar. The official instructions attached to the product page provide the complete sequence.

I installed an aftermarket handlebar: does it fit the same way?

The manufacturer declares compatibility with motorcycles in their original factory configuration. On an aftermarket handlebar, the diameter and geometry change, so the fitment must be checked on a case-by-case basis before purchase.

What will I find in the package?

The two aluminum bars, clamps, and mounting hardware. No protective plastic.
