Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE: specifications, pros and cons, compatible accessories

Adventure touring · since 2023

The first V-Strom with a 21-inch wheel, and the Suzuki model with the most complete catalog

After twenty years of road-oriented V-Stroms, Suzuki has made one that genuinely goes off-road: a 776 cc parallel twin, a 21-inch front wheel, and long-travel suspension. It is also the only Suzuki model for which we have dedicated crash bars, luggage racks, panniers, a stand plate, and risers.

Who it's recommended for

It's the right bike if

  • You want a V-Strom that can genuinely ride on dirt: a 21-inch front wheel and long-travel suspension
  • You are interested in outfitting it: it is the Suzuki with the most extensive catalog, including crash bars and luggage
  • You want simple mechanics and low running costs, which remain a strong point for Suzuki
  • You travel alone or two-up on medium-length trips, with luggage
  • You accept an 855 mm seat height, which on this bike is the price of its chassis

Look elsewhere if

  • You ride mostly on asphalt and highways: the DL1050 offers more protection and comfort
  • You are under five feet nine: the seat is tall and narrow only at the tip
  • Looking for power: 84 horsepower is enough for traveling, not for impressing
  • You have a 2023 800 DE and want racks and mounting plates: they are listed from 2024, so check carefully
  • Planning to reuse accessories from other V-Stroms: nothing fits here

In short: this is the V-Strom that finally goes off-road, and it is also the easiest one to equip. If your real use is on the road with long stages, the V-Strom 1050 is better suited; if you want the same setup while spending less on the used market, the V-Strom 650 remains one of the most sensible touring bikes around.

What to fit, in order of priority

On a bike that goes off-road, protection comes before luggage. Then ergonomics.

The catalog is rounded out by the PIKE TRACKER aluminum top case, the other tank bag sizes up to 10 liters, the folding RM03 and RM01 mirrors with their corresponding adapters, and the motorcycle cover.

Frequently asked questions

Do accessories for the other V-Strom models fit the 800 DE?

No. The 800 DE is a completely new design, with a frame, tank, and suspension different from the DL650 and DL1050: crash bars, frames, handguards, decals, and cruise control have their own codes. Only soft luggage and mirrors fit.

I have the 2023 800 DE: are the frames and the center-stand plate compatible?

Those codes have been listed since 2024. Before ordering, write to us with the registration year and we'll check with the supplier: it's quicker than a return.

High or low crash bar?

The CHG421 includes upper and lower bars in the same kit: it protects both the engine and the side panels, without having to choose.

Can I mount panniers without the frames?

Yes, with soft and semi-rigid luggage using straps. CONQUEROR panniers, however, require the dedicated frames, which are available for this motorcycle.

Do I need the riser if I don't ride off-road?

Less, but it still helps: an extra twenty-five millimeters reduces the load on your wrists and shoulders on long stages, even while remaining seated.
