Almost everyone chooses aluminum cases by looking at the liters and the color. It is the fastest way to spend fifteen hundred euros and end up with a system that does not fit your motorcycle, or that fits but wobbles.
The component that determines everything is something else, and costs a quarter as much: the frame.
A case system consists of three components, not one

When you buy “the cases,” you are actually buying three separate things:
- The side cases — the actual containers.
- The side frame — the steel structure that bolts to the motorcycle subframe and onto which the cases attach.
- The rear rack or top-case plate — if you also want a top case.
They are three separate purchases because they follow different logic. And this is the point that changes the entire choice.
The cases are universal. The frames are not.
In the CONQUEROR series, the cases are always the same, regardless of the motorcycle. The only thing that changes from model to model is the frame they attach to.
The practical consequence is significant and almost nobody explains it: if you change motorcycles one day, you change the frame and keep your cases. A pair of cases is an investment that outlasts the motorcycle; the frame is a consumable tied to the model.
This leads to the correct way to buy them, which also spreads out the cost: first the frame, then one case at a time. Not the complete set all at once.
Why the right cases are narrower
The exhaust runs along the right side of the motorcycle. The right cases therefore have a recess in the lower section to make room for it: the depth decreases from 291 to 236 mm on the C38R and from 243 to 207 mm on the C30R.
That is why the pairs are asymmetrical — 45+38 or 35+30 — and why the symmetrical 45+45 is used only where the exhaust does not get in the way. If someone offers you two identical cases for the same motorcycle, the question to ask is where the exhaust runs.
| Code | Volume | Side | Dimensions | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C45L | 45 L | left | 527 × 315 × 380 mm | — |
| C45R | 45 L | right | 527 × 315 × 380 mm | — |
| C38R | 38 L | right, exhaust recess | 527 × 291 × 380 mm (236 mm at the recess) | — |
| C35L | 35 L | left | 488 × 267 × 397 mm | 5.7 kg |
| C30R | 30 L | right, exhaust recess | 488 × 243 × 397 mm (207 mm at the recess) | 5.28 kg |
The 45 and 38 can also be purchased separately, which is useful both for replacement and for starting with just one. The 35+30 pair is sold only as a complete left-and-right set.
The nine-point attachment, and why the number matters

The case and frame mate at nine support points, covered by utility model patent No. ZL 2017 2 0624675.2.
It is not a brochure number. It serves to eliminate play, and play is the real enemy of a side case: a case that moves by one millimeter will, after a few thousand kilometers of off-road riding, have worn away its own mounts. Less play means less vibration, less noise, and less stress on the motorcycle’s subframe. That is the technical reason why systems with two or three attachment points start rattling after the first season.
The release is also asymmetrically calibrated: in a side fall, the case stays in place, while in a severe frontal impact it is designed to detach so it does not transfer the impact to the subframe. It is a deliberate choice: better to pick up a case from the ground than straighten a subframe.
What “built well” means in practice
- High-strength anodized aluminum alloy plates for corrosion resistance.
- One-piece CNC-machined sealing frame, integrated into the lid, with rubber gaskets, German rivets, and Swiss adhesive.
- Riveted structure: damaged components can be replaced one at a time, without replacing the case. For an accessory that is exposed to impacts, that is the difference between a repair and a replacement.
- Cylinder lock with five spring-loaded plates, removable and replaceable. Make a note of the number printed on the key.
- Rubber bumpers and Case Protector on the corners: they absorb impacts and increase ground friction during a slide, rather than allowing the motorcycle to skid.
- 60-lumen sensor-activated interior light, IP66-rated: it turns on when opened and pulls out to become a headlamp.
- Flocked interior lining that does not scratch the helmet, a document pocket in the lid, and a pass-through aluminum extension bar for securing a tent or waterproof bags.
The sliding luggage rack: where the weight ends up
A top-heavy, rear-mounted loaded top case increases leverage on the subframe and lightens the front end at highway speeds. It is the classic drawback of touring setups, and it is especially noticeable with two people.
The patented sliding luggage rack lets you move the load backward and forward relative to the wheel axle, bringing the center of gravity between the wheels instead of over the rear. If you often travel with a passenger and a full top case, it is the component that most changes the motorcycle's handling.
Which frame for which BMW GS
This is the table that prevents the most costly mistake. The frames are not interchangeable between generations.
| Motorcycle | Side frame | Luggage rack |
|---|---|---|
| R 1200 GS 2013–2018, R 1200 GS Adventure 2014–2018, R 1250 GS and Adventure 2019–2024 (“40 Years GS” included) | JP071B | JP071W · JP072W Adventure · JP071WPRO |
| R 1300 GS from 2023 | JP131B | JP131WB |
| R 1300 GS Adventure from 2024 | JP151B | JP151WPRO |
Two details that are well worth the money they save. First: the system for R 1200 and R 1250 GS is not compatible with the R 1300 GS, which has a dedicated series with different frames. Second, positively: the JPT131WA top-case plate is the only part shared by the R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure, so you do not need to buy it again when switching between them.

The top case
![]()
Choosing the top case is simpler, but there is a criterion. The PIKE TRACKER range has a rigid alloy shell with reinforced corners, stainless-steel hinges, and structural water resistance—perimeter gasket and overlapping rim—not protection provided by a cover that must be fitted when it rains.
- P36, 36 liters: one full-face helmet and the day's essentials, with a compact profile at the rear.
- P45, 45 liters: two helmets or the luggage for a trip, but with more weight overhanging behind the rear axle.
If you often ride alone and want to keep the motorcycle responsive, the 36 is the more sensible choice even when the 45 looks like a bargain. The mounting plate is not included and is model-specific.
Loading and maintenance: two numbers to remember
10 kg per individual pannier. That is the limit stated in the manual, and it is not theoretical caution: above that threshold, the mounts—not the pannier—work poorly.
For cleaning, use a water jet from at least one metre away and only a neutral detergent. No acidic or alkaline products: they damage the anodization, which is precisely the layer that keeps corrosion away. And with the panniers mounted, the motorcycle is wider than you remember: check the tightness of the frame and mounts before every trip.
How to buy, in the right order
- Your motorcycle's frame, checking the model, year, and version. This is the part you cannot get wrong.
- One side pannier, or the correct asymmetrical pair for your exhaust side.
- A luggage rack or plate, only if you also want the top case.
- The top case, choosing the volume based on how often you travel with a passenger.

Frequently asked questions
Are aluminium panniers universal?
The panniers, yes; the frames, no. In the CONQUEROR series, the panniers are identical on all motorcycles: only the side frame changes, as it is specific to the model and year.
If I change motorcycles, do I have to buy everything again?
No. You change the frame and keep the panniers, which remain compatible. That is why it makes sense to consider the panniers a long-term investment and the frame an expense linked to the motorcycle.
Why is the right pannier smaller than the left?
Because the exhaust runs along the right side. The right panniers have a recess at the bottom: depth decreases from 291 to 236 mm on the C38R and from 243 to 207 mm on the C30R. That is why the pairs are asymmetrical.
How much weight can I load into a side pannier?
The manual specifies 10 kg per individual side pannier.
Does the pannier frame for the R 1250 GS fit the R 1300 GS?
No. The R 1300 GS has a dedicated series with different frames. The system for the R 1200 and R 1250 GS is not compatible.
Do the R 1300 GS and the R 1300 GS Adventure use the same frames?
No: the GS uses JP131B and JP131WB, while the Adventure uses JP151B and JP151WPRO. The only shared part is the JPT131WA top-case plate.
Can aluminium panniers be repaired?
Yes. The structure is riveted, so damaged components can be replaced individually. The lock can also be removed and replaced.
How do you wash aluminium panniers?
With a water jet from at least one metre away and a neutral detergent. Acidic or alkaline products damage the anodized finish.
