In brief
The CFMOTO 550MT is the successor to the 450MT, Italy's best-selling A2 adventure bike, according to the press, though CFMOTO itself has yet to announce it. Rumors point to a 526 cm³ parallel twin producing 53 hp, derived from the engine in the 550CL-C cruiser already unveiled in China, with ride-by-wire throttle, cruise control, a curved TFT with navigation, and radial-mount brake calipers. Its arrival is expected in 2027, with EICMA (November 3-8) as the first possible showcase, though this is unconfirmed.
For A2 license holders, the news is only half good: 53 hp exceeds the 35 kW limit, so a restricted version will be needed in Europe. For anyone who owns or is about to buy a 450MT, the real question is different: will today's accessories fit tomorrow's bike? For now, no one can say, and we'll explain why.
- Official: the 526 cm³ engine producing 39 kW and 51 Nm exists, fitted to the 550CL-C sold in China.
- Rumor: everything else about the 550MT, including its equipment.
- Unknown: price, weight, fuel tank, suspension, release date in Italy.
- Accessories: no compatibility with the 450MT has been confirmed. A new subframe and front end make it far from a given.
Only the engine is official for the 550MT; the rest is rumor
CFMOTO hasn't published any press releases, spec sheets, or images of the 550MT. What's circulating comes from camouflaged test mules photographed in China, reports by Spanish publications later picked up in Italy, and one solid clue: the engine, which the manufacturer has already put on sale in another model.
| Item | What's being said | Degree of certainty |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 526 cm³ parallel twin, 270°, 53 hp at 9,000 rpm and 51 Nm | Official on the 550CL-C, presumed on the 550MT |
| Throttle and cruise control | Ride-by-wire with cruise control | Rumor (InMoto, Moto.it) |
| Instruments | Curved TFT, around 5", integrated navigation and OTA updates | Rumor (MotorBox, InMoto) |
| Brakes | Radial-mount front brake calipers | Rumor |
| Wheels | 21" and 18" like the 450MT | Rumor, consistent with spy shots of test mules |
| Frame | Steel tubular frame, reinforced rear subframe for panniers and top case | Rumor (MotorBox, InSella) |
| Front end and seat | Redesigned windscreen, denser padding | Rumor |
| Versions | Standard and Rally | Spanish press speculation, no direct source |
| Price, weight, fuel tank | No reliable data | Unknown |
A figure that doesn't add up: an Italian publication reported around 549 cm³, deducing it from the model name. Chinese type-approval documents for the 550CL-C instead list 74 × 61.2 mm, which works out to 526 cm³. “550” is a model-range label, as is often the case in motorcycle marketing.

The 526 cc engine already exists: it's fitted to the 550CL-C cruiser
The most reliable information in this whole story isn't about the 550MT, but its custom sibling. The 550CL-C appeared in Chinese homologation documents in March and was officially unveiled in China in the following months.
What's different from the 449 cc
- More stroke than bore: bore increases by 2 mm, stroke by 6 mm. This is the classic formula for gaining midrange torque rather than top-end power.
- Engine largely new: CFMOTO says it redesigned over 80% of the main components, with changes to the valves, crankshaft, and clutch.
- Timing and compression: compression ratio increased from 11.5 to 12.5:1 and revised valve timing, according to the 550CL-C presentation.
- Unchanged architecture: liquid-cooled parallel twin, 270° crankshaft, Bosch fuel injection.
The 550CL-C gained 14 kg over the 450CL-C, partly due to its larger tank and extended frame. This figure can't be applied to the 550MT, but it is a clue: anyone imagining a more powerful bike that's just as light should keep expectations low until the technical specifications are released.
Note when extrapolating: The stated power and torque figures are for the cruiser. For an adventure bike, CFMOTO could choose different gearing, mapping, and exhaust. On the 450MT, the same manufacturer quotes a peak torque at a different rpm than for the other 450 models.

Estimates for the 550MT’s price are circulating at under €7,000, with a top speed of around 170 km/h. These are calculations by a publication, not CFMOTO figures: we’re including them for completeness, not as figures to rely on.
At 53 hp, the 550MT is outside the A2 category, but a restricted version is possible
An A2 license allows bikes up to 35 kW, with a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.2 kW/kg. A restricted bike is permitted if its original power does not exceed twice the limit, i.e. 70 kW (Directive 2006/126/EC).
What this means in practice
At 39 kW, the 550MT remains well below 70 kW, so a version restricted to 35 kW is technically and legally feasible. However, the real gain for A2 riders would be modest: from the 450MT’s 31 kW to 35 kW, about 5 hp more. The real benefit, if it arrives, will be in mid-range torque and cruise control on longer rides.
InMoto recalls Voge’s precedent: in Italy, it lists the 525DSX for A2 alongside the more powerful 625DSX. So a 450MT and 550MT coexisting is a plausible scenario, not a certainty.

CFMOTO is changing its best-selling bike: that’s why it’s proceeding cautiously
The 450MT isn’t a niche model. According to InSella, it recorded 2,371 registrations in Italy in 2025, the only Chinese bike in the year’s top 10, and ranked sixth overall in the first half of 2026 with 1,451 bikes.
At the top of that ranking are the Africa Twin, R 1300 GS, Transalp, GS Adventure, and Ténéré 700: bikes that cost twice as much or more. The 450MT’s success rests on three things the 550MT will have to preserve: a price below €6,500, a comprehensive standard equipment package, and the ability to ride it with an A2 license. If the upgrade costs too much, CFMOTO risks moving into the Transalp and Ténéré 700 price bracket without their brand image.
Meanwhile, the competition is moving: BMW with the F 450 GS, KTM with the 390 Adventure R, Morini, Royal Enfield. We compared them in our guide to 450 cc A2 adventure bikes.

Accessories from the 450MT on the 550MT? No one can guarantee that today
It’s the question we’re asked most often when a new derivative model comes out. The honest answer is that it depends on which parts of the bike change, and with the 550MT, the rumors touch precisely the points where accessories are mounted.
| Accessory | Where it mounts | Risk for the 550MT |
|---|---|---|
| Luggage racks and luggage rack | Rear subframe | High: the reinforced subframe is among the most frequent rumors |
| Hand guards | Handlebar and controls | Medium: ride-by-wire means the switchgear and throttle control differ |
| Dashboard film | Display | High: the curved TFT has a different shape |
| Tank decals | Tank sides | High if the bodywork changes |
| Side stand plate | Side stand foot | Needs checking: depends on the side stand fitted |
| Tank bag with ring | Bolts around the tank cap | Low to medium: the CFMOTO ring fits many engine sizes, but the tank cap needs to be checked |
| Cases and top case | On the frame or plate | Low: the cases are universal; the frame is model-specific |
- Accessories listed for the 450MT, mounted on the 450MT.
- Universal products: cases, top cases, soft bags, motorcycle covers.
- Tank bags, provided you check the ring.
- Racks and luggage racks for the 550MT.
- Display protectors and shaped decals.
- Any part that depends on the handlebars or bodywork.
When CFMOTO publishes the technical specifications, we'll check compatibility with manufacturers and update this page at the same address. In the meantime, here's what's in the catalog for the current 450MT.

For the 550MT: none of the three products lists it, because the bike is not yet in the catalog. The kit and luggage rack are designed for the 450MT subframe; the tank bag is more likely to fit, but the ring needs to be checked against the new tank cap.

Buy the 450MT now or wait for the 550MT
There is no single right answer for everyone, but a few questions can help clarify the choice in two minutes.
- Do you have an A2 license and plan to keep it for a long time? The power increase will only be a few horsepower: with current promotions, the 450MT remains very hard to beat on price.
- Do you do a lot of highway riding with a load? Cruise control and extra torque are the 550MT's real selling points. In this case, waiting may make sense.
- Do you need a bike by next spring? The 550MT is expected in 2027, but no date has been announced: CFMOTO often launches in China first and then in Europe, so the wait could be longer.
- Want to set it up for touring right away? Racks, luggage, and protection accessories are already available for the 450MT. For the 550MT, you'll have to wait for accessory manufacturers to get the bike and develop their mounting systems.
- Are you worried about depreciation? The arrival of a higher-end model affects the used value of the previous version. If both models remain in the lineup, that would soften the effect.
Our opinion
Riders with an A2 license who ride on mixed roads and want to set off in 2027 with the bike already equipped have no strong reason to wait. Those with an A license looking for a small adventure bike that handles two-up trips better would be wise to wait for EICMA and the official specifications before signing.
