In brief. A motorcycle battery left unused over winter loses charge for two reasons: self-discharge and parasitic drain from the immobilizer, clock, and control units. The real damage is sulfation: if the battery remains discharged for a long time, some of its capacity never comes back.
The solution is a maintainer connected throughout storage. The reason almost nobody uses one is that there is no power outlet in the garage: a USB-powered charger, such as the LOBOO C20Pro (€31), also works from a power bank. The voltage thresholds cited come from Yuasa and Battery University; the product data is provided by LOBOO.
A battery sitting idle is not a battery at rest
The motorcycle goes into the garage in November in perfect condition. In March, you turn the key and the dashboard barely lights up, then goes out. But the damage didn’t happen in March: it happened slowly, between December and February.
Self-discharge
A battery loses charge on its own, even when disconnected from everything. The cold is only part of the problem: the process continues throughout storage, without anything indicating it.
Parasitic drain
On a modern motorcycle, the immobilizer, clock, and control units draw current even when the ignition is off. It isn’t much, but over four consecutive months on a battery that nobody recharges, it’s enough.
Sulfation: the damage that doesn’t go away
When a lead-acid battery remains discharged for a long time, lead sulfate crystals form on the plates. At first, the process is reversible; if the condition persists, the crystals harden and the lost capacity never comes back. The battery charges and seems fine, but it no longer has enough starting power to turn the starter motor on a cold morning.

The resting voltage indicates whether the battery is already at risk.
You do not need to wait until the motorcycle will not start: a multimeter across the terminals, with the ignition off, tells you in a few seconds whether it is time to take action. The values below apply to 12 V lead-acid batteries (flooded and AGM).
| Open-circuit voltage | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Above 12.6 V | Battery in good condition | Green LED threshold of the LOBOO CSAE-20 SAE cable |
| 12.42 V | About 70% charged: threshold above which it should be recharged | Battery University, BU-702 |
| Below 12.4 V | Needs recharging | Yuasa, Battery Maintenance & Storage |
| Below 12.0 V | Discharged, recharge immediately | Red LED threshold of the LOBOO CSAE-20 SAE cable |
The real problem is the missing outlet
Everyone knows they should use a maintainer. Almost no one has one, and the reason is not the price.
The garage without electricity
The place where the motorcycle is parked is almost never near an outlet. A condominium garage, courtyard, shelter, parking space: the outlet is ten meters away, or there isn't one.
The C20Pro answer
The C20Pro mini charger solves this, not a power problem: it is 6.9 cm long and powered via a USB-A port. A phone charger, a computer port, or, in the situation that matters, a power bank. In a garage without electricity, connect the power bank and let it work.

Six stages and a quick connector make the difference
Two features determine whether a maintainer works well and whether you will actually use it: how it manages charging and how convenient it is to connect.
Six stages, not a trickle
A trickle charger simply maintains a constant voltage. The C20Pro cycle goes through six stages (diagnosis, activation, rapid charging, and then automatic maintenance), with no selectors to adjust and no battery type to choose: just connect it and it works.
Softstart for tired batteries
For batteries that are already aging, there is Softstart mode, which avoids hitting a battery with a fast charge it could not handle. This is the case with a three- or four-year-old battery that you want to keep going until the end of the season.
The quick connector
The box includes a cable with a quick connector: connect it once to the terminals and route it out from under the seat. From then on, the charger snaps on. If you have to remove the seat and look for the clamps in the dark every time, you stop after doing it twice; if it snaps on, you do it.

Four moves before storage save the battery
The work is done in November, not March. Four steps, in order.
- Put the motorcycle away with the battery charged, not discharged. A battery that enters winter already half-drained is the one that won't be there in March.
- Connect the quick-connector cable now, while you feel like removing the seat, not in December with cold hands.
- Check again once a month. With the quick connector, it takes thirty seconds; with a multimeter, recharge below 12.4 V.
- Don't wait for the first sunny day. A battery recovered calmly in February is a live battery; one recovered in a hurry in March has often already lost capacity.
If the motorcycle runs all year
The situation changes little. Short, cold trips recharge less than starting consumes, and the battery still drains. That's why many batteries die in January even on motorcycles that are used.

Frequently asked questions about motorcycle batteries in winter
Why does a motorcycle battery discharge in winter even when the motorcycle is not being used?
For two reasons that work together: the battery's natural self-discharge and the parasitic consumption of the immobilizer, clock, and control units, which draw current even when the ignition is switched off.
What is sulfation and why is it a problem?
It is the formation of lead sulfate crystals on the plates of a battery left discharged for a long time. At first it is reversible, but if the condition persists, the crystals harden and the lost capacity can no longer be recovered.
At what voltage should a motorcycle battery that is not in use be recharged?
For a 12 V lead-acid battery, Yuasa recommends recharging it when it drops below 12.4 V; Battery University puts a 70% state of charge at 12.42 V open circuit, a threshold above which recharging is advisable. The measurement should be taken at the terminals with the ignition switched off.
How often should the battery be checked during storage?
Yuasa recommends checking conventional batteries at least once a month and AGM batteries every three months, more often if the motorcycle is stored in a warm area. With a quick-connect cable, checking takes just a few seconds.
Do I need a power outlet in the garage to use a maintainer?
Not with a USB-A-powered charger like the LOBOO C20Pro: it can run from a power bank, which is the solution for garages and parking spaces without an outlet.
What is the difference between a trickle maintainer and six-stage charging?
A trickle maintainer keeps the voltage constant. A six-stage cycle first performs diagnostics, activation, and fast charging, and only then switches to automatic maintenance, adapting to the battery's condition.
What is Softstart mode for?
According to LOBOO, it is intended for aging batteries: it avoids applying an aggressive fast charge to a battery that could not withstand it, and is useful for getting a three- or four-year-old battery through the end of the season.
Can I charge my car battery with a motorcycle charger?
Not with the C20Pro, whose stated range is 4-35 Ah: it covers motorcycles, scooters, and ATVs, while a car battery is between 45 and 70 Ah. Some chargers cover both, such as the LOBOO C60 in 6 A mode, up to 120 Ah.
Can a motorcycle charger get me back on the road if I break down?
No. With an output between 5 and 18 W, charging times are measured in hours. Emergency starting requires a booster, which is a different device.
Is it suitable for both lead-acid and lithium batteries?
Yes, the C20Pro can be left connected to 12 V lead-acid and lithium iron phosphate batteries, within the stated capacity range. The voltage thresholds in this article, however, apply only to lead-acid batteries: a lithium battery has a different voltage curve.
Can I leave the charger connected all winter?
Yes, if it has an automatic maintenance phase, like the C20Pro and C60: that phase allows you to leave it connected throughout the storage season. A charger without a maintenance phase should instead be disconnected once fully charged.
Is it better to disconnect the battery instead of using a battery maintainer?
Disconnecting the negative terminal eliminates parasitic consumption but not self-discharge: the battery still loses charge and needs to be recharged periodically. On some motorcycles, disconnecting it may erase settings such as the clock: check the owner's manual.
Why does the battery die in winter even on a motorcycle I use?
Because short, cold trips recharge less than starting consumes: the charge drops day after day even when the motorcycle is running, which is why many batteries fail in January.
How do I find my motorcycle battery's capacity in Ah?
It is printed on the battery label and listed in the owner's manual. If you can't find it, send Endurrad the motorcycle's make, model, and year: we'll check it for you.
