Yamaha MT-09: specifications, pros and cons, compatible accessories

Yamaha MT-09
Naked · from 2013

The CP3 three-cylinder engine, and three generations that share nothing

Since 2013, the MT-09 has changed character twice, in 2021 and 2024. The catalog follows those dates: handguards, tank stickers and dashboard films have one part number per generation, and a part from the previous series will not match the mounting points. Here, the first question is not what to fit, but what year yours is.

Who it is recommended for

It's the right bike if

  • You are looking for the character of the CP3 three-cylinder engine, which twin-cylinder engines do not have
  • You want an agile bike on twisty roads and in the city: 193 kg ready to ride with 119 horsepower
  • 825 mm seat height: one of the most accessible on this page, even for shorter riders
  • An essential setup is enough for you: hand protection, tank and dashboard protection included
  • You check the registration year before ordering, because it determines everything here

Look elsewhere if

  • You take long trips: there is no standard wind protection and the tank holds 14 liters
  • You often travel two-up with luggage: this bike needs racks that it does not have
  • Running costs are a concern: with the available power being used, the tires wear out quickly
  • You buy accessories by guesswork: between 2013-2020, 2021-2023 and from 2024 onward, the part numbers are not interchangeable
  • You are looking at the early model years but do not want to work on the suspension, which can be improved from stock

In two words: it is the naked bike for twisty roads and everyday use, not for long trips. If you want the same engine in a touring setup, with a windscreen and luggage, the Tracer 9 is the direct answer; if you are looking for something lighter and less expensive to maintain, the MT-07 covers the same kind of use with less power.

Frequently asked questions

Which handguard kit do I need for my MT-09?

It depends on the year: there is the BHG-126 for 2021-2023 and the BHG-132 for the generation from 2024 onward. The BHG-094 is the multi-model version, also specified for the Tracer, XSR 900, and MT-07 from 2021 to 2024.

Do MT-09 accessories fit the Tracer 9?

Some do, such as the BHG-094 handguard kit and the 2013-2020 instrument protection. The tank stickers, on the other hand, have a dedicated Tracer code because the bodywork is different.

Why is the catalog divided into three sections?

Because the motorcycle changed twice, in 2021 and 2024, and each time the tank, dashboard, and handlebar changed. Manufacturers develop one code per generation, and there is no way to adapt the old one.

Can it be used for touring?

Yes, for medium-length trips with soft luggage. The limitations are the lack of aerodynamic protection and the 14-liter tank. If you want the same mechanics with a touring focus, the Tracer 9 is the answer.

Does the mechanical cruise control fit all model years?

No: the catalog code covers the MT-09 through 2018 and the Sport Tracker ABS through 2015. More recent generations require a different version, which we do not currently have.
