The first ride in October at ten degrees is still bearable. The problem comes in November, when you realize it is not your body giving out: it is your hands, which after forty minutes can no longer feel the clutch lever.
Anyone who rides through winter eventually turns to heated clothing. The real question is not whether to buy it, but where to start — because buying everything at once costs three hundred euros, and you may not need it all.
Cold on a motorcycle is not evenly distributed
At 90 km/h in five-degree temperatures, the body does not cool uniformly. The wind hits the extremities first and hardest, and the extremities also have less muscle mass to burn for warmth.
This gives us the priority order, which is the same for everyone:
- The hands. They are exposed, they are in front of everything, and they are the only part of your body you need for braking. A numb hand is not an annoyance; it is a control problem.
- The torso. Not because it suffers first, but because it controls everything else — we will return to this in a moment.
- The feet. They suffer as much as the hands, but they do not control the motorcycle. And inside a boot, there is almost no room to intervene.
First: the hands

Heated gloves are the item that makes the biggest difference to your day, and they are also the most expensive — 135 €, with the power supply to be added.
Three temperature levels: at an ambient temperature of zero degrees, the low setting reaches 34 °C, the medium 42, and the high 50 °C. The heating elements wrap around the hand to the fingertips, which is where the cold reaches first and where inexpensive heated gloves typically fall short.
The construction consists of five layers: windproof and water-repellent fabric on the outside, then a seamless inner TPU shell, 3M Thinsulate insulation, the heating system, and velvet-like fleece. The seamless TPU is the detail that matters in the rain: where there are no seams, there are no entry points for water. At the same thickness, Thinsulate insulates one and a half times as well as goose down, so the hand stays slim while you can still feel the controls.
The rest are everyday features you only notice when they are missing: a full touchscreen palm, a visor wiper on the left index finger, reflective inserts on the index, middle, and ring fingers — the ones that make you visible when you signal in the dark — a Kevlar lining, and an anti-slip palm.
Pay close attention to the sizing. They range from S to 3XL and are selected based on palm circumference, from 18.5–19.5 cm for S to 23.5–24.5 cm for 3XL. They do not follow your jacket size: take a tailor’s tape measure and measure, as thirty seconds can save you a return.
Second: the torso, and the reason is not what you think

The heated vest costs €90 and offers the best value for money, for a physiological reason: when the torso is cold, the body restricts peripheral circulation to protect the organs, and the hands and feet are the first to suffer. Warming the torso sends more warm blood to the extremities, so the vest indirectly improves hand warmth as well.
The heating element is made of carbon fiber, thinner and softer than traditional heating elements: the entire garment weighs 382 grams and fits under a technical jacket without adding bulk. The sleeves are intentionally absent—under a jacket, extra volume around the arms is the first thing that becomes uncomfortable.
Five heated zones: right and left chest, back, and right and left lower back. The distinctive feature is that the controls are separate and independent, one for the front and one for the back. In practice, you can heat only your back while your chest remains neutral, which is the typical situation for someone with a tall windscreen who gets wind only from the sides.
Battery life stated by the manufacturer, using a 10,000 mAh power bank, at zero degrees and with no wind:

And there’s one thing that still works even when the battery is dead: the padding is 3M Thinsulate, which retains over 80% of its insulating power even when wet—cotton, under the same conditions, drops below 30%. The vest therefore remains a functional thermal garment even when the electronics have run out of power. That’s no small thing, and it’s why it’s the first sensible purchase for anyone who doesn’t want to spend everything at once.
Sizes from M to 3XL. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one, because the vest is worn over other layers.
Third: your feet

Heated insoles are the final piece of the puzzle, and cost just under €90.
Cold feet always arrive before the rest of you, and with a motorcycle boot there’s no room to put on an extra sock: in fact, making it tighter worsens circulation and therefore the cold. Heated insoles solve the problem from the opposite direction, because they fit into the footwear you already use and warm the entire sole, not just the toe area.
Four temperature levels, a surface made of non-slip silicone, and an IPX7 rating, which here is useful more against the moisture that forms inside the boot than against rain.
One size covers sizes 38 to 45: they can be trimmed along the printed guides. It's worth stating clearly — once cut, they cannot be restored, so do it just once, carefully, using the original insole as a template.
The chapter that causes orders to go wrong: the power supply

This is the part that almost nobody explains before purchase, and it's where the emails the next day come from.
The gloves do not include a power supply. They have two ways to get power, and they are not equivalent:
- Dedicated 4000 mAh battery — €22.50 each, it fits into the zippered wrist pocket and weighs 93 grams. Battery life in the gloves: 2.5 hours on low, 2 on medium, 1.5 at maximum. It recharges via USB-C in about 2.5 hours with a 2 A charger. You need one per glove: there are two, not one.
- Power bank plus Y-cable — the cable costs €10 and delivers power from a single power bank to both gloves, with the cables running under the jacket. It's the solution for long trips, because the battery life becomes that of the power bank you carry with you. You need an output of at least 15 W, preferably 18 W: below that threshold, the fast-charging protocols of some power banks cause interruptions or slow heating. If this happens to you, that's almost always the problem, not the glove.
The vest, on the other hand, has a USB-A cable already integrated into the pocket and requires a 5 V, 2 A power bank, which is also not included. If you already have one at home, the vest costs exactly its listed price.
So the actual calculation is this:

If you have to choose just one thing
Get the vest. It costs less than everything else, requires no accessories if you already have a power bank, indirectly helps your hands too, and continues to insulate when the battery runs out.
If your hands are already the main problem and the vest is no longer enough, then the gloves — remembering to add two batteries or the Y-cable to your cart.
The insoles come later, and make the most sense for those who drive long stretches on the highway in winter, when their feet remain still in the same position for hours.
