In brief
Yes, you can travel by motorcycle in the South and on the islands in winter, provided you choose low-lying coastal roads, short stages, and dress for the wind, not the thermometer. In Palermo, average January highs are 15.4 °C and lows are 9.5 °C (1991-2020 average), but at 90 km/h the wind makes exposed skin feel about 3 °C when the air temperature is 9.5 °C.
- Elevation: below 500 meters, you’re almost always good to go; Etna, the Madonie and the Nebrodi are snow country in winter.
- Daylight: on December 21, Palermo gets about 50 minutes more daylight than Milan, but still less than 10 hours.
- The weak point is the wind: your neck, hands and feet determine comfort, not your jacket.
- Ferries: The Strait of Messina crossing takes about 20 minutes; check Sardinia deals every year, as they change.
The South is rideable in winter: the climate figures
Anyone leaving Milan in December expects fog, salt and ice. Those heading down to Palermo or the Catania Plain find a different ride: tires that warm up, roads that are almost always dry during the day, and no need to change clothes every 100 kilometers. But it’s not summer arriving late, and the data makes that clear.
| Month | Palermo min / max | Palermo rainy days | Palermo hours of sunshine per day | Catania Plain min / max |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 14 / 20.4 °C | 10 | 5 | 10 / 21 °C |
| December | 11 / 16.7 °C | 12 | 4 | 6 / 17 °C |
| January | 9.5 / 15.4 °C | 12 | 5 | 5 / 16 °C |
| February | 9.1 / 15.3 °C | 9 | 5 | 5 / 16 °C |
| March | 10.3 / 17.1 °C | 9 | 6 | not reported |
The real cold is the wind: how it feels at 90 km/h
Your car's thermometer says 10 °C, and it feels like light-jacket weather. On a motorcycle, it isn't. Speed carries heat away from your body, and the sensation on exposed skin drops by several degrees.
| Air temperature | Perceived at 50 km/h | Perceived at 90 km/h | Perceived at 110 km/h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 °C | 5 °C | 4 °C | 4 °C |
| 9.5 °C (average January low in Palermo) | 5 °C | 3 °C | 3 °C |
| 6.5 °C (high-altitude areas in Sardinia, see below) | 1 °C | -1 °C | -1 °C |
| 5 °C | -1 °C | -3 °C | -4 °C |
| 0 °C | -8 °C | -10 °C | -11 °C |
The practical lesson is simple: you're most vulnerable where the wind hits you. Your neck, wrists, hands, and toes. A good neck warmer, heated grips or suitable gloves, and a windproof layer on your torso are worth more than a thick jacket.
Daylight hours: plan your stop around sunset
The shortest day of the year makes every travel plan tighter than it looks on the map. You gain a little more daylight in the South, but not enough to relax.
| City | Length of day on December 21 | Difference from Milan |
|---|---|---|
| Milan | about 8 h 40 | - |
| Rome | about 9 h 05 | +25 minutes |
| Palermo | about 9 h 30 | +50 minutes |
On October 25, 2026, standard time returns and it gets dark earlier. If your ride ends after sunset, read how to ride a motorcycle in the dark during standard time: lights, visor, and following distances all change, so it's worth preparing before you find yourself on a hairpin bend. And if the weather worsens, riding in the rain calls for a completely different approach to braking: braking, tires, and slippery spots.
Elevation determines your route: below 500 meters, you're safe; above that, you're not
In physics, air temperature drops by about 6.5 °C every 1,000 meters (ICAO standard atmosphere). In the South, that means 25 kilometers can separate a mild coast from a road with snow and ice.
Three concrete examples from the sources
- Etna: the Monteconca ski lifts run from 1,828 to 2,090 meters, and those at Anfiteatro from 2,050 to 2,336 meters (source: SiViaggia).
- Madonie: Piano Battaglia is at about 1,570 meters and rises to 1,840 meters on Monte Mufara. In the Nebrodi, Monte Soro reaches 1,847 meters.
- Sardinia: on an April trip with the BMW R 1300 GS, moto.it's author reported temperatures ranging from 17-18 °C on the coast to 6-7 °C in the Foresta di Burgos.
| Altitude | What to expect in winter | Endurrad guideline |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 500 m | Mild climate, with a risk of frost only in the early hours and in shaded areas. | Recommended route. |
| 500-1.000 m | Cold mornings, with shaded stretches of cold, damp road surface. | Set off after 10 a.m. and tackle the climbs in daylight. |
| Above 1,000 m | Snow and ice are likely; roads may be closed or restricted. | Avoid unless forecasts and road conditions have been checked. |
Where it makes sense to go: coasts, plains, and coastal roads
A winter trip in the South works when the route stays at low altitude, with stages of 150-250 kilometers and a backup plan for bad weather. Here are the areas for which we have verified data.
- You stay on the coast and plains below 500 meters, such as the Palermo coastline or the Catania plain.
- You set off after 10 a.m. and arrive before sunset.
- You have a covered alternative when the rain lasts more than a day (in Palermo, it rains for 12 days in December).
- You want to visit the Madonie, Etna, or Gennargentu: winter is real up there.
- Plan stages of 400 kilometers, arriving after dark.
- Set off wearing June clothes, thinking, “It’s warm in the South.”
Sardinia: Alghero-Bosa, 50 km of coastline
According to InSella, the Alghero-Bosa coastal road is about 50 km of bends. It starts as the SP105 from Alghero and becomes the SP49 at the border with the province of Oristano. The road surface is described as being in good condition for long stretches, and the area is known as the «Coast of the Griffons», home to Italy's largest griffon vulture colony. For a winter trip, it's an example of a low-altitude route with scenic views: the final stretch toward Capo Caccia at sunset is recommended.
Sicily: if you'd rather rent a motorcycle
If you don't want to ship your motorcycle, you can rent an adventure bike in Sicily: in our article on motorcycle rental in Catania, you'll find bikes, prices, requirements, and contact details for a local operator.
Ferries: across the Strait of Messina in 20 minutes; plan ahead for Sardinia
To reach Sicily by motorcycle, you almost always cross the Strait. For Sardinia, you need to book an actual ferry, and winter affects schedules and prices.
| Route | Data | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Villa San Giovanni - Messina | About 20 minutes, operated by Caronte & Tourist, departures about every hour until 22:40, motorcycles about €15 (indicative price, varies by season) | Ferryhopper |
| Booking across the Strait | Recommended at least 48 hours in advance; arrive with your vehicle at least one hour beforehand | Ferryhopper |
| Livorno - Olbia | Route used for moto.it's trip to Sardinia | moto.it |
| Civitavecchia - Porto Torres | Grimaldi Lines route on promotion in 2024 | Ferryhopper |
How to dress: three layers and extra protection for each weak spot
The most repeated advice from winter riders is to dress “like an onion”: wear thermal and technical clothing in layers you can take off. Motorbox adds a few useful details: a clear, scratch-free visor with Pinlock to prevent fogging; inexpensive plastic gloves over your winter gloves when it rains or gets very cold; and heated clothing and gloves for the worst days.
Neck and face
A neck warmer blocks air from entering under your helmet. It works like a lightweight headband, but on its own it is not enough on cold days: pair it with a thermal base layer.
Hands
Hands are the first to give in. You have three options: winter gloves, heated gloves or heated handlebar covers, which fit over the original grips. Hand guards block the wind from your hands: for serious cold, Barkbusters has the BBZ-001 winter model in waterproof fabric, currently sold out.
Torso and feet
The heated motorcycle clothing collection includes vests, gloves, insoles and power accessories; as of this update, they are all sold out. For an overview of how to choose, read Heated motorcycle clothing: where to start.

Six checks before you set off
Before your departure date, check these points in order.
- Tires. If they’re nearly worn out, replace them. Motorbox recommends compounds that aren’t too sporty, because soft compounds are designed for hot asphalt. In extreme cold, some people lower the pressure by a few tenths of a bar to warm the tire up faster, but this isn’t recommended for long trips: follow the motorcycle manual.
- Battery. Cold weather puts an underperforming battery to the test. Read how to keep it going in winter and, if the bike is left standing between stops, check out the battery maintainer. Accessories are in the motorcycle batteries and chargers collection.
- Lights and visor. Check all bulbs and use a clear visor with Pinlock. It gets dark early, and fog causes the visor to mist up.
- Cold starts. Motorbox recommends warming up for about 30 seconds longer and using gentle throttle for the first few kilometers.
- Electrical system. Before adding heated grips or other electrical loads, check the available current.
- Plan B. Three-day forecast, ferry with flexible cancellation, and an alternative indoor stop.
