Everything you need to know before ordering

Compatibility, included items, installation, and documents: below is every detail verified against the official Barkbusters documentation.

Description Barkbusters BHG-045 handguard mounting kit for BMW G 650 GS, Sertao and R 100 GS

The BHG-045 is the specific mounting kit for four BMW models thirty years apart: heat-treated aluminum bar, clamps, and hardware.

Stated compatibility

Model Years Conditions
BMW G 650 GS from 2011
BMW G 650 GS Sertao from 2011
BMW R 100 GS up to 1990 only without heated grips
BMW R 100 GS PD up to 1990 only without heated grips

Compatibility stated for motorcycles in original factory configuration.

The only stated exclusion

For the R 100 GS and R 100 GS PD, the manufacturer states compatibility only if the motorcycle does not have heated grips. This is worth checking on the motorcycle itself rather than on the model's technical specifications: on a thirty-year-old motorcycle, the grips may have been added later.

Impact protection

Two mounting points and heat-treated aluminum. Barkbusters states that this configuration is designed for impact protection.

The plastics are NOT included

Plastic Character
JET-003 Compact profile, the most discreet option: the most fitting choice for a classic motorcycle
VPS-203 Wind deflector adjustable to two positions
STM-003 The most extensive coverage in the range: for road use and cold weather
BCF-003 Genuine carbon fiber

EGO plastics are not compatible.

What you will find in the package

  • Two heat-treated aluminum bars, natural finish.
  • Clamps and complete hardware.

What is NOT included

  • Protective plastics, to be chosen from JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON.

Why choose it
  • Protezione dagli impatti dichiarata.
  • Copre quattro modelli. Dalla G 650 GS del 2011 alla R 100 GS degli anni Ottanta.
  • Finitura in alluminio naturale.
  • Quattro plastiche compatibili. JET, VPS, STORM e CARBON, intercambiabili negli anni sulla stessa struttura.
  • Prodotto in Australia.
Who is it recommended for

Assembly and documents

  2. Rimuovi i paramani originali, se presenti, e i contrappesi.
  4. Fissa la barra in alluminio all estremità del manubrio e al morsetto, poi portala in posizione.

The R 100 GS has a condition

  • The manufacturer declares them only if they do not have heated grips. It is the only exclusion for this code.
A condition on the R 100 GS

A condition on the R 100 GS

This is the only stated exclusion for this code: for the R 100 GS and PD, the manufacturer declares compatibility only if the motorcycle does not have heated grips. On a thirty-year-old motorcycle, it is best to inspect the handlebar rather than the model’s technical specifications: the grips may have been added by a previous owner.

FAQs

For more information, see our FAQ of frequently asked questions.

Which motorcycles does it fit?

On four BMW models: G 650 GS and G 650 GS Sertao from 2011, R 100 GS and R 100 GS PD up to 1990. However, there is one condition for the latter two: only if they do not have heated grips.

I have an R 100 GS with heated grips: will it fit?

No, and the manufacturer is explicit on this point: it states compatibility only with the R 100 GS and R 100 GS PD without heated grips. This is the only stated exclusion for this part number, and it is worth verifying before ordering.

How can I tell if my R 100 GS has heated grips?

Look for the dedicated switch on the control cluster and the wiring entering the grips. If the motorcycle has changed hands several times, they may have been installed later: inspect the motorcycle, not the model's technical specifications. If you're unsure, send us a photo of the handlebars.

Does the same kit fit a motorcycle from the 1980s and one from 2011?

Yes, and it is one of the most curious cases in the catalog: the modern G 650 GS and the 1980s R 100 GS share the mounting geometry required for this kit. The manufacturer lists them under the same code.

Does it also fit the Sertao?

Yes, the manufacturer lists the G 650 GS Sertao from 2011, along with the G 650 GS. This is information that is often missing from dealers' specifications.

Are the protective plastic parts included?

No. The BHG-045 is the mounting frame only: aluminum bars, clamps, and hardware. The plastic components are selected and purchased separately.

What plastics can I install on it?

Four series: JET with a compact profile, VPS with an adjustable deflector, STORM with extended coverage, and CARBON in fiber. EGO plastics are not compatible.

Does it protect the lever in a fall?

Yes. It has two attachment points, and the manufacturer states that heat treatment of the aluminum is intended to add strength and protection against impacts.

Do I need to remove the original counterweights?

The structure attaches to the end of the handlebar, so the original bar-end weights must be removed. The official instructions attached to the product page show the correct sequence.

Do they look out of place on a vintage motorcycle?

It is a personal assessment. The natural aluminum finish blends well with the aesthetics of the R 100 GS, and the JET plastics are the most compact in the range if you want to remain discreet. However, anyone who uses a PD for what it was designed for has a practical reason that comes before aesthetics.

What will I find in the package?

The two aluminum bars, clamps, and mounting hardware. No protective plastic.

I have an older G 650 GS from before 2011: will it fit?

The manufacturer lists the G 650 GS from 2011 onward. For earlier model years, the code is different: write to us with the motorcycle's year, and we'll tell you the correct one.
