Soft panniers that become protection when inflated
LOBOO Alps inflatable motorcycle panniers are soft 23- or 30-liter panniers that attach to the motorcycle's side frames and, when inflated, become an air cushion between the motorcycle and the ground. Here you'll find how they work, how to check whether your frame is compatible, when spacers are needed, how much you can load, and what the manufacturer actually states.
Every figure comes from the LOBOO user manual and official technical panels. Anything the manufacturer does not state is identified here as not stated.
In brief. An inflatable motorcycle pannier is a soft pannier whose body is an air chamber: it is inflated by hand with an integrated pump and, once inflated, holds its shape and acts as a cushion between the motorcycle and the ground. LOBOO Alps inflatable motorcycle panniers are sold as a pair, with mounting supports, in 23 or 30 liters per side.
The requirement is the frame, not the motorcycle. You need side frames with a rectangular profile and an 18 mm tube, with a center-to-center distance of 307 to 362 mm in width and 180 to 207 mm in height. On motorcycles with a protruding side exhaust, BDPQ01LBK spacers are required.
The manufacturer's stated figures. Waterproofing IPX7; load capacity no less than 300 kg per inflated pannier; inflation retention over 6 hours; maximum load 12 kg per side on asphalt and 8 kg off-road. They are not an approved safety device.

What is an inflatable side bag
Aluminum hard cases retain their shape but are heavy, have sharp edges, and in a fall they bend together with the frame. Traditional soft bags are lightweight but collapse when empty or half full. The inflatable side bag combines the advantages of both: it is soft, but air gives it shape.
The system consists of three parts: the inflatable case, which is an air chamber with a cargo compartment; the outer pocket with a MOLLE panel, which contains it; and the support plate, which attaches to the motorcycle frame. When inflated, the case becomes rigid and structured even when it contains little; when deflated, it becomes soft luggage that is easy to store.
In English, they are referred to in many ways: inflatable side bags, inflatable side cases, soft side bags, or soft cases. They are all the same type of product: side luggage made of technical fabric, mounted on rear pannier racks.
LOBOO calls it the ALPS Inflatable Side Bag, models BAB23TBK and BAB30TBK; it is manufactured by Shenzhen LOBOO Motor Accessories. On Endurrad, you can find it on the page for the Alps 23 L / 30 L inflatable motorcycle side cases.
How to inflate and deflate it
No compressors or external pumps are needed. Each case has a one-way valve—that is, a valve that lets air in but does not let it out—with an integrated pump.
The procedure in the manual
- Load the case and close the zipper. Always inflate it with the zipper closed.
- Open the valve by pressing the switch diagonally.
- Compress the pump several times, waiting each time for it to return to its shape before pressing it again, until the case is full.
- Close the valve by pressing the upper front part of the switch.
Do not overinflate it. The manual specifies that pressurizing it is unnecessary: when inflated fully, the case stays full for more than 6 hours.
To deflate
Open the watertight zipper: the valve is one-way and has no release. It may seem strange the first time, but this is the manufacturer's procedure, and actions other than those specified can damage the valve.
In the mountains
The manual asks you to adjust the inflation by adding or releasing air when traveling through areas with significant changes in elevation. As you climb, external pressure decreases and the air inside the case expands; as you descend, the opposite happens.
When deflated, the case remains usable luggage; it loses its cushioning effect, not its function as a case. Keep it inflated while riding: only when inflated does it withstand the stated load and retain its shape under load.
What it protects in a fall, and what it does not
LOBOO states that the inflated case withstands a load-bearing force of at least 300 kg in the event of a fall. The figure should be understood for what it actually says.
What “300 kg” means
This is the force the inflated case can withstand without failing. It does not specify at what speed, on what surface, or for how many impacts: it is the manufacturer's indication of the air chamber's robustness, not the result of a standardized impact test.
What LOBOO says about how it works in a fall
On its website, the manufacturer describes the inflated case as a second engine guard for the rear of the motorcycle: in low-speed falls, it is the first thing to touch the ground, instead of the side frame and exhaust. This is the manufacturer's description.
In the technical panel, LOBOO also states that it conducted a 13,000-mile test, approximately 21,000 km, including rollover and load tests. This is an internal manufacturer test, not a certification.
What it is not
- It is not an approved safety device: the manufacturer makes no claims of approval for this accessory.
- It does not protect the rider: that requires a helmet, protective clothing, and certified protective gear.
- It does not replace the engine guard: it protects the rear area, not the engine or fairings.
Compatibility: the 18 mm frame matters, not the motorcycle model
The Alps mount works on rectangular-profile side pannier racks with an 18 mm tube diameter. The motorcycle model matters only because it determines which frame you have and where the exhaust runs. LOBOO identifies 18 mm as the diameter used by most original frames on adventure motorcycles.
Three measurements to check
- Tube diameter: 18 mm. Use calipers, or a tape measure: an 18 mm tube measures approximately 56.5 mm in circumference.
- Horizontal center-to-center distance: 307 to 362 mm, that is, the distance between the axes of the frame’s vertical tubes.
- Vertical center-to-center distance: 180 to 207 mm, the distance between the axes of the horizontal tubes.
The 180–207 mm vertical range applies to both product versions. According to the LOBOO panel, the new version covers a wider range, from 145 to 222 mm, but the manufacturer ships the old or new version at random: to be sure, check the common range.
On 18 mm rectangular frames not specified by the manufacturer, installation is possible but requires drilling the mounting points: this is an irreversible operation and is the installer’s responsibility.

Installations documented by the manufacturer
Don't have the side frames? Spacers, exhaust, and CPQ131 deflector
On many motorcycles with a protruding side exhaust end, the original luggage frame curves outward—the flared section—to leave room for the exhaust end. That curve must be compensated for, which is the purpose of the LOBOO BDPQ01LBK spacers, called the Side Bag Exhaust Avoidance Kit by the manufacturer, a kit for avoiding the exhaust.
How to tell if you need them
- View the frame from the exhaust side. If the tube is straight and passes behind the exhaust end, the spacers are not needed.
- If the frame curves outward to clear the exhaust end, they are needed. They are adjustable between 49.5 and 71 mm.
- Typical cases: BMW R 1200 and R 1250 GS, KTM 1290 Super Adventure, Honda Africa Twin, Honda XL750 Transalp, and models with the same geometry.
BMW R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure
Here, the frames are symmetrical and the spacers are not needed. On the short-exhaust version, however, LOBOO documentation indicates that the LOBOO CPQ131 exhaust deflector is necessary, as it redirects hot gases away from the luggage. It is a separate accessory.
The manual's rule regarding the exhaust
The case must not touch the exhaust end, and the exhaust gases must not blow directly onto the case or frame. If the plate interferes with the exhaust when using the standard installation method, the manual indicates that you should use the second method, described in the installation.

Step-by-step installation
The support plate arrives pre-assembled: adjust it once to your frame, then the pannier can be attached and removed in a few seconds. Only the included T25 key is required. The plate has six attachments: two upper hooks, two side blocks, and two lower hooks.

Loosen the attachments
Using the T25 key, loosen the plate’s two upper hooks, two side blocks, and two lower hooks just enough to move them.

Tighten onto the frame in sequence
Place the plate against the frame and first tighten the lower hooks onto the lower tube, then the side blocks against the side tubes, and finally the upper hooks. Tightening torque: 5 N·m. Keep the attachments as close as possible to the frame’s four corners: load capacity and stability improve.

Install the pocket: 23 or 30 liters
Thread the pocket’s strap through the plate’s lower hole, bring it back through the upper hole, and fasten it at the position marked on the label: one for 23 L and one for 30 L.

Secure the side straps
Thread the pocket’s side straps through the plate’s holes, bring them back through the side channels, and adjust their position according to the selected capacity.

Insert, attach, and inflate
Insert the pannier into the pocket, attach the assembly to the frame with the quick-release system, inflate it with the pump, and close the anti-theft lock.
Two installation methods
The plate has two positions for the upper hooks. If, with method 1, the plate interferes with the exhaust, the manual instructs you to switch to method 2.
Where to position them
The manual asks you to mount the panniers as far forward as possible, without interfering with the rider or passenger and without compromising the motorcycle’s stability. After installation, and periodically thereafter, recheck the tightness of all screws.

How much can be loaded per side
The LOBOO owner's manual expressly prohibits overloading and sets two limits per side: 12 kg on paved roads and 8 kg off-road. The same figure appears in the technical panel.
There is a reason for the difference: off-road, every pothole multiplies the stress on the mounting point compared with the static weight. The manufacturer's page shows only one figure, approximately 8 kg per side: if you want a number that is always valid, use that one.
The motorcycle manufacturer's limit still applies: the maximum load for the side rack specified in the owner's manual.
Do not confuse them. The 12 and 8 kg figures are the maximum load. The 300 kg figure is the force that the fully loaded case can withstand in a fall. They are two different figures.
IPX7 waterproofing and waterproof zipper
IPX7 is a designation in the IP code of the international IEC 60529 standard: the X indicates that dust protection is not classified, while 7 indicates resistance to temporary immersion, up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.
For the Alps, the IPX7 rating is declared by the manufacturer. It is achieved by the TPU composite fabric (thermoplastic polyurethane, a flexible, waterproof plastic layer) bonded to 840D nylon on 0.6 mm mesh, and the airtight waterproof zipper with auxiliary zipper pull and T-shaped slider. On its website, LOBOO adds that the seams are made using high-frequency welding.
IPX7 concerns temporary immersion: it is not a guarantee for prolonged immersion.
The manual's rules for the zipper
- Keep it completely closed during use: protection and waterproofing depend on this.
- Before using it, remove mud, sand, and foreign objects from the teeth.
- Lubricate it regularly with the LOBOO lubricant for waterproof zippers, included in the package.
- The correct grip, as shown in the manual: one hand holds the tab at the end of the zipper, while the other pulls the slider by gripping it directly, not by the cord.
Key-operated anti-theft system with a single key
Each case has an anti-theft cable and a keyed cylinder lock, mounted in the plate's slot with its clip. The cable passes over the case and locks into the plate's upper buckle.
The manual specifies that this buckle is designed only for the LOBOO anti-theft cable and provides basic protection: it should not be considered the primary anti-theft system. It deters someone opening the bag out of curiosity at a gas station or café; however, documents and wallet should still stay with you.
One key for everything
According to LOBOO's technical documentation, the lock cylinder is designed for a single key: it can be paired with the key for LOBOO aluminum cases, such as the PIKE TRACKER cases. MOLLE, reflective elements, and accessories
In addition to the internal capacity, the Alps' external pocket offers ways to carry more and be more visible.
- MOLLE panel on the outer side: a grid of sewn webbing, originally developed for military use, to which pouches, bottle holders, and accessories can be attached. LOBOO states that it is also compatible with mounts from other brands.
- Expansion rings for securing extra cargo with straps or bungee cords, always within the 12- and 8-kg limits per side.
- Reflective inserts on the sides, in the part of the motorcycle most visible to following traffic at night.
- Bags from other brands: according to the LOBOO panel, the plate accepts side bags from other brands measuring 360–420 × 150–200 × 380–440 mm.
Use on the seat: the sources do not agree. A LOBOO panel shows the case secured to the seat with separately sold straps. However, the 2026 user manual states that the product is intended only for mounting on the side rack and says not to use it outside its intended application. We follow the manual.
Sizes: 23 or 30 liters
The two cases have the same height and length. Only the depth changes—that is, how far the case extends from the frame.

Dimensions with the support exclude the fastening buckle. The available configurations are 23+23 L, 23+30 L, and 30+30 L.
Old and new versions
LOBOO states that it ships the old or new version at random. It is not possible to guarantee which one will arrive.
- What changes: the front label, «23/30 LITERS WATERPROOF» on the old version and «ALPS SERIES WATERPROOF» on the new one, some details of the external panel, and the internal fastening, which offers two methods on the new version.
- What stays the same: capacity, materials, dimensions, and stated performance.
- For compatibility, the shared range applies: 307–362 mm in width and 180–207 mm in height.

Maintenance and usage limits
Maintenance
- Clean only with a neutral detergent: the manual prohibits contact with acidic or alkaline liquids.
- Remove mud and sand from the zipper before use and lubricate it regularly with LOBOO lubricant.
- Keep the zipper fully closed at all times during the journey.
- Periodically recheck that all the plate screws are tight.
- With significant changes in altitude, adjust the inflation by adding or releasing air.
- Store the panniers deflated and dry.
Limits to be aware of
- The manual specifies mounting them only on the motorcycle’s side luggage rack.
- Pre-installed 18 mm rectangular side racks are required.
- Maximum load: 12 kg per side on asphalt, 8 kg off-road, within the motorcycle manufacturer’s limit.
- The pannier must not touch the exhaust, and the exhaust gases must not blow directly onto it.
- The 300 kg load capacity is a manufacturer’s statement, not a type approval.

How do I check whether my rack is compatible?
Measure three things: the tube diameter, which must be 18 mm (approximately 56.5 mm in circumference when measured with a tailor’s tape); the widthwise center-to-center distance, between 307 and 362 mm; and the heightwise center-to-center distance, between 180 and 207 mm. Then check the profile: it must be rectangular, not irregular or raised.
When are BDPQ01LBK spacers needed?
When the pannier rack curves outward to clear the exhaust muffler. They are typically needed for the BMW R 1200 and R 1250 GS, KTM 1290 Super Adventure, Honda Africa Twin, and Honda XL750 Transalp. They are adjustable between 49.5 and 71 mm and are selected in the configurations “with spacers”.
I have a BMW R 1300 GS: what do I need?
On the R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure, the frames are symmetrical, so spacers are not needed. On the short-exhaust version, LOBOO documentation states that the CPQ131 exhaust deflector, sold separately, is required.
Can they be installed on the Honda CB500X, NX500, CB400X, or NX400?
No, not for now. LOBOO lists these models as temporarily incompatible: the exhaust outlet is aligned with the pannier and does not leave enough clearance. The manufacturer has announced compatibility updates.
How are they inflated and deflated?
With the zipper closed, open the valve by pressing the switch diagonally, compress the integrated pump several times, waiting each time for it to return to its shape, and close it by pressing the upper front part of the switch. It does not need to be pressurized. To deflate it, open the waterproof zipper, as the valve is one-way.
How long does inflation last?
According to the LOBOO manual, when fully inflated, the pannier remains full for more than 6 hours. With significant changes in altitude, it must be adjusted by adding or releasing air. It must be kept inflated while riding: only when inflated does it support the stated load capacity and retain its shape.
Do inflatable side panniers really protect you in a crash?
They provide additional passive protection: LOBOO states a load capacity of at least 300 kg per fully inflated pannier and describes them as a second crash bar for the rear section. They are not an approved safety device and do not protect the rider.
How much weight can I load on each side?
The LOBOO user manual prohibits overloading and specifies 12 kg per side on paved roads and 8 kg off-road. The manufacturer's page gives approximately 8 kg per side as a single value. The maximum load for each side frame specified by the motorcycle manufacturer must also always be respected.
Are they waterproof? What does IPX7 mean?
The manufacturer states an IPX7 rating, which under IEC 60529 indicates protection against temporary immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This is provided by the 840D nylon TPU composite fabric and the airtight waterproof zipper, which must always be kept fully closed during use.
Can they be locked?
Yes. Each pannier has an anti-theft cable and a cylinder lock. The manual specifies that they provide basic protection and should not be considered the main anti-theft system. According to LOBOO, the cylinder can be matched to the key for LOBOO aluminum panniers; feasibility must be verified before ordering.
Is 23 or 30 liters better?
The two panniers have the same height and length; the 30 L version is deeper and, with the mount, protrudes 50 mm more on each side (240 mm versus 190 mm). They can be combined: the configurations are 23+23, 23+30, and 30+30 liters.
What tools are needed to install them?
Only the T25 key is included in the package. The plate screws must be tightened to 5 N·m in this sequence: first the lower hooks, then the side blocks, and finally the upper hooks. A torque wrench is required to apply the torque accurately.
What is included in the package?
For each pannier, according to the manual's parts list: the inflatable pannier, support plate, outer pouch, lock cylinder with clip and key, T25 key, and zip lubricant. BDPQ01LBK spacers are included only in configurations that require them. Side frames are not included.
How much do they weigh?
The weight is not stated by the manufacturer, either in the manual or on the technical panels, so we do not publish an estimate.
