In brief. The BMW R 1300 GS is BMW Motorrad's boxer adventure bike presented on September 28, 2023: a 1,300 cc two-cylinder engine with 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm, 237 kg ready to ride, a 19-liter fuel tank and an 850 mm seat height (official BMW figures). In 2026, the BMW Italia price list starts at 21,500 euros; Triple Black, Trophy and Option 719 cost more, and the ASA automated transmission is optional.

Compared with the R 1250 GS, it has a new engine, 9 more hp and 12 kg less weight. Here you will find the complete technical data, version prices, differences from the 1250, what happened to the other models with the 1300 boxer and which protection accessories to start with. Each number indicates its source.

The R 1300 GS puts 145 hp into 237 kg

These are the numbers that matter before discussing versions or accessories. They are all taken from BMW Motorrad Italia's official technical data sheet, consulted on October 5, 2026.

How to read the data. Weight, fuel consumption and performance are figures declared by the manufacturer. With fuel consumption of 4.8 l/100 km, the 19-liter tank theoretically gives just under 400 km of range: this is our calculation, not a BMW figure, and actual range is lower on the highway with a full load.

The engine and frame are new, not revised versions of those on the 1250

The R 1300 GS is not based on the R 1250 GS with a few modifications. BMW changed the engine dimensions, the chassis and the way the bike is adjusted.

BMW R 1300 GS frame with the boxer engine
R 1300 GS frame: the boxer engine remains a load-bearing part of the structure.

A shorter-stroke boxer engine

The bore increases from 102.5 to 106.5 mm and the stroke decreases from 76 to 73 mm. A more oversquare engine revs more easily: maximum power is still reached at 7,750 rpm, but it is 145 hp instead of 136. The ShiftCam variable valve timing, introduced with the R 1250 GS, remains.

EVO suspension and dynamic adjustment

Up front there is the EVO Telelever, and at the rear the EVO Paralever. BMW offers DSA (Dynamic Suspension Adjustment) as an optional extra, adapting both damping and spring stiffness while riding. The subframe is a single-piece unit, redesigned compared with the 1250.

Lighting, electronics and radar

The headlight is a matrix LED unit. ABS Pro and traction control are standard; radar-based systems, such as adaptive cruise control, are optional and vary by trim level.

Beware of first-generation accessories. The mounting points changed with the new frame: crash bars, pannier frames and the top-case plate for the R 1250 GS do not fit the R 1300 GS. Dedicated part numbers are required.

In 2026, the R 1300 GS starts at 21,500 euros

The base price comes from BMW Motorrad Italia. For the other BMW versions, BMW does not publish a single price list, so we report the prices from the InSella 2026 price list, which collects them all.

The versions change in terms of colors and equipment, not the engine or technical specifications.

What's changing for model year 2026

Not much. BMW Motorrad's press release of November 27, 2025, for the R 1300 GS cites only one new feature: the GS Trophy in the new White Aluminium matt metallic and Racingblue metallic color combination. The engine, chassis and technical specifications remain those of the 2023 model. Anyone who finds a new 2025 model available for immediate delivery is not buying a technically outdated motorcycle.

ASA: when is it worth paying for?

The Automated Shift Assistant operates the clutch and gear changes with electronic actuators: you can ride without a clutch lever, either automatically or by shifting with the foot pedal. It is useful in traffic and on long trips; those who often ride on tight off-road trails or want direct clutch control can do without it.

Prices subject to change. Price lists change during the year and dealerships run their own promotions. Before deciding, always compare with the BMW Motorrad Italia configurator.

The R 1250 GS gains 9 hp and loses 12 kg

This is the question asked by those who already have a GS or are considering a used one: how much does it really change? We compare the official BMW data for the two standard models.

The R 1300 GS is the better choice if
  • you want a lighter GS to move around and ride at low speeds
  • you are interested in ASA, DSA, and radar systems
  • you are starting from scratch with accessories and do not need to reuse those from the 1250
Stick with the R 1250 GS if
  • you already have panniers, frames, and guards installed: they do not fit the 1300
  • you are looking for the longest range: one extra liter in the tank
  • the budget matters more than the 9 hp: the used 1250 costs less

The 1300 boxer arrived on the RT, RS, and R, as reported in 2024

When the R 1300 GS came out, the German press anticipated that the same engine would end up in the other road-going boxer models. That is what happened: in 2025 BMW introduced the R 1300 R, R 1300 RS, and R 1300 RT, all with 145 hp and 149 Nm.

VTR Customs' R 1301: a road-focused GS, not a BMW model

At the end of February 2024, Swiss dealer VTR Customs of Schmerikon unveiled the R 1301, one of the first custom builds based on the R 1300 GS: shortened tail (a prototype, with a small series possible only if there is demand), reduced front fender, BMW forged wheels, Metzeler M9RR supersport tires, and a weight saving estimated by the builder at 5-7 kg. It was a special, not a BMW preview.

And the future of the GS?

Spy photos and rumors are circulating about a future evolution, which we keep separate from the facts: you can find them in the articles about the BMW M 1300 GS and the alleged BMW R 1350 GS. As of October 2026, the R 1300 GS is the model in the price list.

It is the GS for those who travel on roads and unpaved surfaces, not for those looking for lightness

At 237 kg, it weighs less than before, but it is still a large enduro. The point is to understand whether your use is what it was designed for.

BMW R 1300 GS in touring configuration
Travel, even with two people, including stretches of unpaved roads: the natural terrain of the R 1300 GS.
It works if
  • you ride long stretches on asphalt with detours onto gravel roads
  • you travel as a pair with luggage, within the 228 kg payload limit
  • you want the latest-generation electronics and rider aids
Not for you if
  • you are looking for a bike for demanding off-road riding: weight and height matter there
  • you need more than 19 liters: the GS Adventure is available
  • you are a beginner: 237 kg to move by hand requires experience
Try the seat before signing. The height ranges from 800 to 890 mm depending on the seat and suspension selected, and this makes a big difference to safety when stationary. Try the bike in the configuration you will buy, not the dealer's.

The cylinder heads should be protected before adding luggage

On the R 1300 GS, the valve covers protrude from the sides of the engine: in a stationary fall, they are the first thing to hit the ground. That is why the sensible order is protection, then luggage, then ergonomics. The complete guide is in how to choose accessories for the BMW R 1300 GS; here are the three pieces to start with, with prices and availability checked on October 5, 2026.

Frequently asked questions about the BMW R 1300 GS

How much does the BMW R 1300 GS cost in 2026?

The BMW Motorrad Italia price list starts at 21,500 euros for the base version, including 22% VAT, on-road preparation, and the first service. According to the 2026 InSella price list, the Triple Black costs 22,380 euros, the Trophy 22,400 euros, and the Option 719 24,460 euros. Packages and options, such as the 900-euro ASA gearbox, are added separately.

How much horsepower does the BMW R 1300 GS have?

The 1,300 cc boxer engine produces 107 kW, or 145 hp, at 7,750 rpm, with maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm. These are official BMW Motorrad figures, identical for all R 1300 GS versions.

How much does the BMW R 1300 GS weigh?

BMW states 237 kg in running order according to the DIN standard, that is, with the tank 90% full. This figure refers to the standard motorcycle: luggage, crash bars, and optional packages increase the weight.

How many liters does the R 1300 GS tank hold?

The tank holds 19 liters, compared with 30 liters for the R 1300 GS Adventure. With the stated WMTC consumption of 4.8 l/100 km, the theoretical range exceeds 390 km, but this is a calculated estimate: it decreases on loaded motorways or off-road.

What is the seat height of the R 1300 GS?

The standard seat height is 850 mm. BMW specifies an overall range from 800 to 890 mm, achievable with the optional seats and suspension setups. Shorter riders should try the motorcycle with the seat and suspension they intend to purchase.

What is the difference between the R 1300 GS and R 1250 GS?

The R 1300 GS has a new engine (106.5 × 73 mm versus 102.5 × 76 mm), 9 hp and 6 Nm more, weighs 12 kg less (237 versus 249 kg), and has a smaller tank (19 versus 20 liters). The frame, EVO suspension, and headlight have also changed. R 1250 GS accessories generally do not fit the 1300.

What is the ASA gearbox on the BMW R 1300 GS?

ASA stands for Automated Shift Assistant: a six-speed gearbox with the clutch and gear changes managed by electronic actuators, without a clutch lever. It can be used in automatic mode or shifted with the foot lever. On the R 1300 GS it is an option, listed at 900 euros in the 2026 InSella price list.

What versions of the R 1300 GS are available?

On the BMW Motorrad Italia website, the range includes the base R 1300 GS, Triple Black (focused on comfort), GS Trophy (focused on off-road riding), and Option 719. Separate from these is the R 1300 GS Adventure, which is a different motorcycle with a 30-liter tank.

What changes on the 2026 model-year R 1300 GS?

According to the BMW Motorrad press release of November 27, 2025, the main change for the R 1300 GS is the GS Trophy color combination, now White Aluminium matt metallic and Racingblue metallic. The engine, chassis, and technical specifications remain those of the 2023 version.

Is the R 1300 GS suitable for two-up riding?

Yes, with one limit to keep in mind: BMW states a permitted total weight of 465 kg and a payload of 228 kg. A fully equipped rider and passenger, full panniers, and a top case quickly approach that figure, so it is advisable to weigh the luggage and choose frames specifically for the 1300.

Do R 1300 GS accessories also fit the GS Adventure?

Not always. Some components are shared, such as the LOBOO CHW131 radiator guard, but pannier frames, crash bars, and kickstand plates have different part numbers: on the GS, the LOBOO frames are JP131B; on the Adventure, JP151B. Compatibility should always be checked by model.

What are the first protection parts to install on the R 1300 GS?

The cylinder heads protrude from the sides of the engine and are the first thing to hit the ground in a stationary fall: that is why crash bars are the priority, followed by radiator protection and a skid plate if you ride off-road.

What was VTR Customs' BMW R 1301?

It was a modified R 1300 GS presented at the end of February 2024 by Swiss dealer VTR Customs: shortened tail, reduced front fender, Metzeler M9RR supersport tires, and a claimed weight saving of 5-7 kg. It is not a production BMW model.

Has the R 1300 GS been replaced by an R 1350 GS?

No. As of October 2026, the R 1300 GS is still listed by BMW Motorrad Italy. Rumors and spy photos of a future evolution of the GS are circulating, and we cover them in dedicated articles, separating facts from speculation.

It was a special, not a BMW preview.\n\n\nAnd the future of the GS?\nSpy photos and rumors are circulating about a future evolution, which we keep separate from the facts: you can find them in the articles about the BMW M 1300 GS and the alleged BMW R 1350 GS. As of October 2026, the R 1300 GS is the model in the price list.\n\n\n\nIt is the GS for those who travel on roads and unpaved surfaces, not for those looking for lightness\nAt 237 kg, it weighs less than before, but it is still a large enduro. The point is to understand whether your use is what it was designed for.\nTravel, even with two people, including stretches of unpaved roads: the natural terrain of the R 1300 GS.\n\n\nIt works if\nyou ride long stretches on asphalt with detours onto gravel roads\nyou travel as a pair with luggage, within the 228 kg payload limit\nyou want the latest-generation electronics and rider aids\n\n\n\nNot for you if\nyou are looking for a bike for demanding off-road riding: weight and height matter there\nyou need more than 19 liters: the GS Adventure is available\nyou are a beginner: 237 kg to move by hand requires experience\n\n\n\n\nTry the seat before signing. The height ranges from 800 to 890 mm depending on the seat and suspension selected, and this makes a big difference to safety when stationary. Try the bike in the configuration you will buy, not the dealer's.\n\n\nThe cylinder heads should be protected before adding luggage\nOn the R 1300 GS, the valve covers protrude from the sides of the engine: in a stationary fall, they are the first thing to hit the ground. That is why the sensible order is protection, then luggage, then ergonomics. According to the 2026 InSella price list, the Triple Black costs 22,380 euros, the Trophy 22,400 euros, and the Option 719 24,460 euros. Packages and options, such as the 900-euro ASA gearbox, are added separately.\nHow much horsepower does the BMW R 1300 GS have? The 1,300 cc boxer engine produces 107 kW, or 145 hp, at 7,750 rpm, with maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm. These are official BMW Motorrad figures, identical for all R 1300 GS versions.\nHow much does the BMW R 1300 GS weigh?BMW states 237 kg in running order according to the DIN standard, that is, with the tank 90% full. This figure refers to the standard motorcycle: luggage, crash bars, and optional packages increase the weight.\nHow many liters does the R 1300 GS tank hold? The tank holds 19 liters, compared with 30 liters for the R 1300 GS Adventure. With the stated WMTC consumption of 4.8 l\/100 km, the theoretical range exceeds 390 km, but this is a calculated estimate: it decreases on loaded motorways or off-road.\nWhat is the seat height of the R 1300 GS?The standard seat height is 850 mm. BMW specifies an overall range from 800 to 890 mm, achievable with the optional seats and suspension setups. Shorter riders should try the motorcycle with the seat and suspension they intend to purchase.\nWhat is the difference between the R 1300 GS and R 1250 GS?The R 1300 GS has a new engine (106.5 × 73 mm versus 102.5 × 76 mm), 9 hp and 6 Nm more, weighs 12 kg less (237 versus 249 kg), and has a smaller tank (19 versus 20 liters). The frame, EVO suspension, and headlight have also changed. R 1250 GS accessories generally do not fit the 1300.\nWhat is the ASA gearbox on the BMW R 1300 GS?ASA stands for Automated Shift Assistant: a six-speed gearbox with the clutch and gear changes managed by electronic actuators, without a clutch lever. It can be used in automatic mode or shifted with the foot lever. On the R 1300 GS it is an option, listed at 900 euros in the 2026 InSella price list.\nWhat versions of the R 1300 GS are available? On the BMW Motorrad Italia website, the range includes the base R 1300 GS, Triple Black (focused on comfort), GS Trophy (focused on off-road riding), and Option 719. Separate from these is the R 1300 GS Adventure, which is a different motorcycle with a 30-liter tank.\nWhat changes on the 2026 model-year R 1300 GS?According to the BMW Motorrad press release of November 27, 2025, the main change for the R 1300 GS is the GS Trophy color combination, now White Aluminium matt metallic and Racingblue metallic. The engine, chassis, and technical specifications remain those of the 2023 version.\nIs the R 1300 GS suitable for two-up riding?Yes, with one limit to keep in mind: BMW states a permitted total weight of 465 kg and a payload of 228 kg. A fully equipped rider and passenger, full panniers, and a top case quickly approach that figure, so it is advisable to weigh the luggage and choose frames specifically for the 1300.\nDo R 1300 GS accessories also fit the GS Adventure? Not always. Some components are shared, such as the LOBOO CHW131 radiator guard, but pannier frames, crash bars, and kickstand plates have different part numbers: on the GS, the LOBOO frames are JP131B; on the Adventure, JP151B. Compatibility should always be checked by model.\nWhat are the first protection parts to install on the R 1300 GS?The cylinder heads protrude from the sides of the engine and are the first thing to hit the ground in a stationary fall: that is why crash bars are the priority, followed by radiator protection and a skid plate if you ride off-road.\nWhat was VTR Customs' BMW R 1301?It was a modified R 1300 GS presented at the end of February 2024 by Swiss dealer VTR Customs: shortened tail, reduced front fender, Metzeler M9RR supersport tires, and a claimed weight saving of 5-7 kg. It is not a production BMW model.\nHas the R 1300 GS been replaced by an R 1350 GS?No. As of October 2026, the R 1300 GS is still listed by BMW Motorrad Italy. Rumors and spy photos of a future evolution of the GS are circulating, and we cover them in dedicated articles, separating facts from speculation.\n\n\nRead next\n\nAccessory guideBMW R 1300 GS: how to choose the right accessories\nSpecifications and accessoriesBMW R 1300 GS Adventure: differences from the GS\nHistoryGS: the history of BMW's large enduro\nRumorsBMW M 1300 GS: spy photos\nLuggageWanderer 40+40 L panniers for R 1300 GS\nProtectionMotorcycle skid plates: how to choose\n\n\n\nDo you have an R 1300 GS, or are you about to pick one up?\nTell us the make, model, and year of your motorcycle, and whether it is a standard GS or an Adventure: we will point you to the right protection, frames, and luggage with the correct part number, without duplicates.\nAccessories for BMW R 1300 GS\n\n\nSources.
