Barkbusters BHG-092 handguard mounting kit for Kawasaki KLR650 from 2022

The BHG-092 is the Barkbusters mounting kit designed for the handlebars of the Kawasaki KLR650 from 2022 onward. It is the structure onto which Barkbusters guards are mounted: on its own, it protects levers and hands from impacts; with the guards fitted, it also adds protection from wind, cold, and branches.

Protection and use

Barkbusters clearly distinguishes between the two mounting configurations, and the two-point configuration, anchored at both the end and center of the handlebar, is the one the manufacturer specifies for impact protection. On the KLR650, a dual-sport bike designed for off-road travel as well, this means protecting the brake and clutch levers from falls, rocks, and branches.

Materials and construction

Heat-treated aluminum bars (manufacturer code BAR-V-043), MFC-22 multi-fit clamps with right and left CP8 connectors. The manufacturer does not state the finish or weight of the kit, so we do not report them.

Compatibility

This code is not specified for the KLR650 before 2022. Barkbusters states compatibility for motorcycles in original factory configuration, with the standard 22 mm handlebar.

Installation

Remove the handlebar weights and any original handguards. The original handlebar weights are installed with threadlocker, so considerable torque may be required to unscrew them; the manufacturer then recommends cleaning up the threads with a tap before installing the kit's 8 mm bolt. The wiring attached to the handlebar must be moved to make room for the clamp.

Install the clamp without tightening it, secure the bar at the end and to the connector, position it horizontally when viewed from the side, and tighten in the specified order: end bolt, bar bolt, clamp bolts, connector bolt. Specified torque values: 10 Nm for the M6 bolts and 28 Nm for the M8 bolts, using medium-strength threadlocker and checking again after the first 50 km. Leave approximately 3 mm of clearance between the throttle grip and the handguard.

Clearance with the fairing: the handlebar must be kept in the neutral position. If it is rotated forward, the handguard may touch the fairing; depending on the riding position, a 10 mm riser and lever adjustment may be required. Barkbusters recommends installation by a workshop.

• Protective guards. The kit is the structure only: the guards must be purchased separately from those listed by the manufacturer.
• Any 10 mm handlebar riser, tap for cleaning up the threads, threadlocker, and tools.
