What is the DENALI system?

DENALI Electronics is a US manufacturer of motorcycle lighting and components. What distinguishes it is not a single light, but the fact that all its products communicate with one another through a proprietary management protocol.

The system consists of three levels. The light, which comes in many sizes and power ratings. The wiring, which can be universal with a handlebar switch or specific to the motorcycle model. The controller, which is the most interesting part: DialDim in its universal version, or CANsmart when the motorcycle has a compatible data bus.

The technology that ties the system together is called DataDim. It uses three-wire wiring with a dedicated intensity-control line, allowing the light to automatically change brightness in response to the motorcycle's original high-beam control, without additional switches. This is why it makes sense to stay within the ecosystem once you have chosen it.

DL DataDim Series

This is the newest line and the one with the most comprehensive technical documentation. The entire series specifies ECE R149 driving beam certification, IP68 and IP69K protection ratings, a 6000 K color temperature, 9-32 V DC voltage, and compliance with EMC R10, CISPR 25, CE, and UKCA. DrySeal construction robotically seals the lens and uses internal potting at the cable entry, which is where these products really fail. The lenses are not interchangeable: the beam is chosen when purchasing.

The DL-2 is the only model in the series with a visibility-type beam: a wide flood at night, designed to appear as bright as possible to other drivers during the day. It is the choice for commuting or as the lower pair in a two-level setup. The DL-9 is the most powerful DENALI model listed on Endurrad, with a claimed range of 560 meters per pair, and it is also the largest: it only suits maxi enduros.

D series and S series

These are the original lines, sold as individual units. On the D2, D3, D4, and DM, the TriOptic system includes one spot lens installed and one flood lens supplied, so with a pair you can configure spot+spot, flood+flood, or one of each type. This is flexibility the DL series does not offer.

The D3 deserves a note: it is the only model in the range with documented dual certification, an SAE/DOT J581 and ECE R112 hybrid lens, and an ECE-only spot lens because it is too powerful for U.S. regulations. Both lenses are included.

DialDim and CANsmart: the part that makes the difference

Buying DENALI lights without the controller means using half the product. The controller unlocks the functions that make you choose this brand.

The universal DialDim, €331.00, lets you switch on and independently adjust two groups of lights from a single knob. It adds synchronization with the original high beam, a horn-linked strobe, automatic turn-signal shutoff, an adjustable electronic fuse, and a battery voltmeter function.

The CANsmart is the motorcycle-specific version for bikes with a compatible data bus, typically BMW: it connects to the diagnostic port and lets you control the auxiliary lights using the original handlebar buttons, without cutting a single wire.

Endurrad also offers complete packages for BMW GS models that include auxiliary lights, dedicated mounts, and a CANsmart under a single code: from €1,006.00 for the R 1250 GS with D4 to €1,585.00 for the R 1300 GS Adventure with D7 PRO. The D7 PRO is available only as part of these kits: seven 14 W Cree XML3 LEDs per pod, 98 W power consumption, 11,900 raw lumens per pod, IP68 and IP69K, an E-Mark ECE R112-approved spot lens, with a dual independent circuit that allows the central optic to be used as a DRL or as a full-power flood light.

When DENALI is the right choice—and when it is not

DENALI makes sense if you are building a layered system with multiple pairs of lights for different functions, if you want interchangeable lenses to change the beam depending on the season, if you have or want a CANsmart, or if you need the highest available protection rating with the DL series.

DENALI is not the right choice if you are looking for an approved low-beam light. This is the brand’s structural limitation in the European context: its lights are certified as auxiliary high beams, so they work alongside the original high beam and switch off with it. If your problem is having more useful light even when meeting oncoming traffic, the answer is a light with an ECE R149-approved low beam, such as the L series from LOBOO.

It is not the right choice if budget is your main constraint and you want a complete system straight away: two D7s plus wiring cost more than €800, while an approved pair of LOBOO lights with wiring included starts at €261.00.
