In brief. The CGRC CAN is the module that connects the Chigee AIO‑5 Play display to your BMW's original Wonder Wheel, allowing you to control it without taking your hands off the handlebars. It comes in two versions: 4 pin, which connects to the RDC module (the tire pressure sensor) on the GS/GSA family, and 8 pin, which connects to the DWA module (the factory alarm system) on C, F, S, R, and K models.
The key point before ordering: the R 1300 GS and the R 1300 GS Adventure have changed electronic platforms and use a 6-pin DWA module, which Endurrad does not currently list. Anyone riding an R 1300 GS should buy neither the 4-pin nor the 8-pin version: neither one will connect.
Data verified against Chigee's official product page and the distributor's technical data sheet, as well as the description of the product sold by Endurrad.
The Wonder Wheel does not communicate with the AIO-5 Play on its own
Anyone installing an AIO-5 Play BMW Edition quickly discovers that the display powers on, connects to the Nav Prep mount, and receives power without touching a cable. The problem arises when trying to use the handlebar wheel, the Wonder Wheel, to scroll through the menus: without an extra component, the wheel remains silent and the display can only be controlled on-screen, which is inconvenient and increasingly dangerous while riding.
That extra component is the CGRC CAN: a small electronic module, no larger than a lighter, that connects inline to a connector already present on the motorcycle and translates signals from the BMW CAN bus into commands that the AIO-5 Play understands. Once connected, the handlebar wheel scrolls through the display menus, selects items, and on models equipped with factory sensors, the display can also read tire pressure (TPMS) on the Chigee screen.
The module neither replaces nor duplicates the motorcycle's electronics: it simply reads the data traffic already present on the CAN bus and passes it to the display through the AIO-5 Play's dedicated cable. Therefore, choosing the correct version does not depend on the display, which is identical in all cases, but on the connector that your BMW actually provides.
The correct connector depends on the motorcycle family, not the display
Chigee sells the CGRC CAN in three variants, distinguished only by the number of pins on the connector they plug into. Endurrad lists two: the 4-pin and the 8-pin versions. The third, with 6 pins, is currently unavailable on our website.
| Connector | BMW module | Motorcycle family | Original module function | Available from Endurrad |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 pin | RDC | GS and GS Adventure (up to the R 1250 GS/GSA generation, including F 750 GS, F 850 GS/GSA, and F 900 GS/GSA) | Tire pressure sensors (TPMS) | Yes, SKU MFP0120 |
| 8 pins | DWA | C Series (C 400 X, C 400 GT), F (F 750/850/900), S 1000 XR/R, R 1200 RT/R 1250 RT, K 1600 (B, GA, GT, GTL) | Factory-fitted anti-theft system | Yes, SKU MFP0121 |
| 6 pins | DWA (new generation) | R 1300 GS, R 1300 GS Adventure, R 1300 RT | Factory-fitted anti-theft system, updated platform | No, not in the catalog |
The distinction between RDC and DWA is not a minor technical detail: they are two different control units with different functions, located in different parts of the motorcycle. The CGRC CAN module is not "universal with an interchangeable connector": it is designed to plug into one of the two, so ordering the wrong version means, at best, having to send the package back.
The installation is plug-in, but you need to find the right module on the motorcycle before ordering
The CGRC CAN installs without cutting or stripping any wire: disconnect the original RDC or DWA connector, insert the module in between, and close everything back up. It's the kind of job a motorcyclist used to installing electrical accessories can do alone in a few minutes, provided they've identified the right connector.
The weak point of the installation is not the electronics, but physically locating the connector: the position of RDC and DWA varies from model to model and is not always visible, often being under the seat or behind a side panel. If you're not sure which module your motorcycle has or where it is located, it's best to check the workshop manual or ask the dealership before ordering, rather than finding out with the package already open.
Once the CGRC CAN is connected, the cable plugs into the dedicated input on the AIO-5 Play BMW Edition: from then on, the handlebar wheel scrolls through the display menus exactly as it would with the original BMW navigation system, without any additional configuration on the display.
- Determine whether your motorcycle has the RDC module (tire pressure sensors) or DWA (anti-theft system), and which generation it belongs to: this varies by model.
- If you ride an R 1300 GS, R 1300 GS Adventure, or R 1300 RT, do not order either the 4-pin or 8-pin version: neither is compatible.
- If you have a K 1600 model year 2022/2023 or a 2023 R 1250 RT, first check with your dealer for possible conflicts with the TFT display.
- Treat the AIO-5 Play BMW Edition as the base: the CGRC CAN is an accessory added to the display, not a replacement for it.
- If you are unsure about the physical connector, consult your motorcycle's workshop manual before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is the CGRC CAN?
It is an electronic module that connects inline to an existing connector on the BMW (RDC or DWA, depending on the model) and translates the motorcycle's CAN bus signals into commands readable by the Chigee AIO-5 Play display, particularly those generated by the handlebar Wonder Wheel.
Is it absolutely necessary to use the AIO-5 Play on a BMW?
No. The display also works without CGRC CAN when powered and attached to the Nav Prep mount: without the module, only menu control via the handlebar wheel is unavailable, so you must use the screen instead.
How can I tell whether my motorcycle has the RDC or DWA module?
It depends on the family: GS and GS Adventure models up to the R 1250 GS/GSA generation (including the F 750/850/900 GS) typically use RDC, connected to the tire pressure sensors. C, F, S, R (up to the R 1250 RT) and K 1600 models use DWA, connected to the standard anti-theft system. If in doubt, the workshop manual for the specific model is the most reliable source.
Is my R 1300 GS compatible with this product?
Not with the two versions currently sold on Endurrad. Chigee specifies a 6-pin DWA module for the R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure, different from both the 4-pin GS/GSA and the 8-pin C/F/S/R/K versions, and this variant is not currently listed in the Endurrad catalog.
What happens if I install the wrong version?
The physical connector does not fit: the 4-pin and 8-pin connectors have a different number of pins and cannot be accidentally interchanged. In practice, this means the product would need to be returned, not that there is a risk to the motorcycle's electrical system.
Does the module also unlock TPMS on the display?
Yes, on the 4-pin version connected to the RDC module, if your motorcycle has the standard pressure sensors: the display can show tire pressure data on its dedicated screen. This function is not available on the 8-pin version connected to the DWA, because the DWA manages the anti-theft system, not the tire sensors.
Does installation interfere with the motorcycle's DWA anti-theft system?
The module connects inline to the DWA connector to read its signals, without replacing or disabling the original anti-theft control unit. If you have any doubts about how the anti-theft system works after installation, check with your BMW dealer.
Is it compatible with the K 1600 and R 1250 RT?
In general, yes, with the 8-pin version. The exception is the 2022/2023 model year for the K 1600 and 2023 for the R 1250 RT, where Chigee reports possible conflicts with the standard TFT display: for these specific versions, the manufacturer recommends the wireless remote instead of the wired module.
Does installation require cutting or soldering wires?
No. The CGRC CAN is installed in line between the original connector and its counterpart on the motorcycle: disconnect it, plug in the module, and reconnect everything. It requires neither soldering nor modifications to the original wiring.
Will installation void the BMW warranty?
We cannot provide an answer that applies to every dealership and every warranty contract: this is an accessory that plugs into an existing connector without modifying it, but for your specific motorcycle, the decision is up to your BMW dealership.
Does it also work with the AIO-5 Lite, or only with the AIO-5 Play BMW Edition?
The product sold on Endurrad is designed for the AIO-5 Play BMW Edition, the display developed specifically for the BMW ecosystem. For other variants in the Chigee range, check compatibility on the product page for the display you own before ordering the module.
How much does it cost, and what is included in the package?
Both the 4-pin and 8-pin versions cost €50.00 on Endurrad. The package includes the CGRC CAN module with the specific connector; the AIO-5 Play BMW Edition display is purchased separately.
Do I need an installer, or can I install it myself?
Anyone who has already installed plug-in electrical accessories on a motorcycle can do it themselves: no soldering is required. The part that requires the most attention is physically locating the RDC or DWA connector, not connecting the module.
What should I do if my motorcycle does not have the right connector?
