Description Barkbusters BHG-018 handguard mounting kit for Honda Transalp XL600V, XL650V and XL700V

The BHG-018 is the Barkbusters mounting kit for the Honda Transalp across its three historic generations: XL600V, XL650V and XL700V, all models, with no year restrictions. It is the aluminium frame that supports the handguards: it protects hands, levers and controls from branches, gravel and low-speed falls, and stays on the motorcycle even when you change the plastics.

As with the entire range, the frame and protective plastics are two separate items: here you are buying the frame only, with hardware and handlebar weights.

Key features

  • Two-point mounting — attachment at the handlebar end plus a clamp on the straight section. This is the configuration the manufacturer specifies for impact protection.
  • Heat-treated aluminium bar, with a wraparound design and natural aluminium finish.
  • Handlebar weights included — they do not need to be purchased separately, and on motorcycles of this age that is one less part to track down.
  • Three generations, one code, with no year restrictions.
  • Interchangeable plastics — compatible with JET, VPS, STORM and CARBON, each sold separately.
  • Made in Australia by Rideworx Pty Ltd.

Protection and use

The Transalp is the motorcycle that taught half of Italy what a dual sport is, and many are still on the road. On a motorcycle that is twenty years old or more, the problem is not only falling over: levers, controls, mirrors and switchgear are no longer kept in stock, and when they break, you have to look for used replacements. The two-point mounting is the configuration Barkbusters designates for impact protection: the bar forms a cage around the hand and transfers the impact to the frame instead of the lever. Original plastic handguards without an internal frame do not do that job. The single-point configuration, the other option in the range, is specified by the manufacturer only for protection from wind and weather.

Materials and construction

Heat-treated aluminium frame, a process the manufacturer uses to increase strength and impact absorption capacity. The design is wraparound: it starts at the straight section of the handlebar, curves around the hand and closes at the end.

Compatibility declared by Barkbusters for motorcycles in original factory configuration. On a motorcycle of this age, the handlebar may already have been replaced: in that case, mounting compatibility must be checked before purchase. Unsure about your model? Pay attention to the model. This is the code for the historic Transalp models. For the XL750 Transalp from 2023 onward, which is a new motorcycle, the manufacturer specifies the BHG-108 kit.

Installation

Mounts to the original handlebar, with no drilling or modifications to the motorcycle. The standard plastic handguards, if present, must be removed, as must the original handlebar weights: the frame attaches precisely at the end of the handlebar, and the weights supplied in the kit are used in their place.

Before fully tightening, check that the throttle, front brake, clutch and engine stop switch operate freely and that the steering turns from lock to lock without interference. Check the tightness again after the first 50 km. The complete procedure and warnings are provided in the official INS-BHG-018-NP instructions, attached to this listing in the Manufacturer documents section.

What is included

  • Two heat-treated aluminium bars
  • Clamps for the straight section of the handlebar
  • Complete mounting hardware
  • Handlebar weights

What is NOT included

  • Protective plastics. They must be selected and ordered separately from the JET, VPS, STORM and CARBON series. EGO plastics are not compatible with this frame.
  • LED lights and other accessories in the range, which remain separate items.

Why choose Barkbusters

Barkbusters is a Rideworx Pty Ltd brand, an Australian company that has designed and manufactured motorcycle handguards since 1984. Bike-specific kits remain in the catalogue for many years after a model is discontinued: this is exactly the case with the Transalp, which Honda discontinued in 2012 and which is still supported with a dedicated code.

Why buy it from Endurrad

Endurrad supplies accessories for touring, adventure and enduro motorcycles: compatibility checked against the manufacturer's documentation, official instructions attached to the listing and pre-purchase assistance if your model is unclear. Free shipping in Italy over €100 and in Europe over €250, 14-day returns, 1-year warranty. See the full Barkbusters range.

Why choose it
  • Protezione dagli impatti dichiarata.
  • Quattro plastiche compatibili. JET, VPS, STORM e CARBON, intercambiabili negli anni sulla stessa struttura.
  • Prodotto in Australia.
Who is it recommended for

Assembly and documents

  4. Fissa la barra in alluminio all estremità del manubrio e al morsetto, poi portala in posizione.

Twenty years of Transalp, one code only

  • From the 1987 XL600V to the XL700V: the handlebars have never changed enough.
Structure only, including counterweights

Structure only, including counterweights

What you see is the complete kit: two heat-treated aluminum bars, the clamps, the hardware, and the handlebar weights. The protective plastics are a separate item, to be chosen from JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON.

Two attachment points, wraparound design

Two attachment points, wraparound design

The bar is anchored at two points: inside the handlebar end, replacing the original bar-end weight, and on a clamp that closes around the straight section in front of the controls. This is the configuration Barkbusters recommends for impact protection, and on a motorcycle that is already a few years old, it is also the most economical way to protect levers and controls that are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

On the XL700V, with your choice of fairings

On the XL700V, with your choice of fairings

In the official photo, the kit is mounted on an XL700V Transalp with VPS plastics, sold separately. This is how the entire range works: the structure remains on the motorcycle, while the plastics can be chosen from JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON, changed over the years, and changed in color without touching the aluminum.

FAQs

For more information, see our FAQ of frequently asked questions.

Are the protective plastic parts included?

No. Here you purchase only the aluminum frame with the hardware and counterweights. The JET, VPS, STORM, or CARBON plastics are ordered separately, remain interchangeable on the same frame, and can be changed to a different color even years later.

My model is listed in the table, but the year isn’t: can I still install it?

For this code, the manufacturer sets no year restrictions: it lists all model years of the XL600V, XL650V, and XL700V Transalp. This is rare in the range, where the same motorcycle normally requires a different kit when the handlebar changes. If you're unsure about yours, send us the model and year and we'll check.

Does it really apply to all three Transalps?

Yes, the manufacturer lists the XL600V, XL650V, and XL700V as all models. They are three generations distributed over more than twenty years, but the handlebar geometry and the space around the controls have remained compatible with the same structure.

I have the new XL750 Transalp: is this kit suitable?

No. The XL750 Transalp, introduced in 2023, is a completely new motorcycle, and the manufacturer specifies a dedicated part number, BHG-108. BHG-018 remains the part number for the three historic Transalp models.

Are the handlebar counterweights included?

Yes, the manufacturer states that they are included with this code. The motorcycle’s standard bar-end weights must be removed because the structure attaches directly to the end of the handlebar, and the supplied ones are installed in their place. On motorcycles of this age, it is also one less replacement part to look for.

My Transalp already has the original handguards: are they really necessary?

The original handguards are made of plastic and have no internal structure: they protect against the wind, but in a fall they bend together with the lever. This kit adds the aluminum bar anchored at two points, which is the part that absorbs the impact. The original plastics must be removed and replaced with one of the Barkbusters series.

What protective plastics can I mount on this structure?

Four series declared by the manufacturer: JET with a compact profile, VPS with an adjustable deflector, STORM with extended coverage, and CARBON made of carbon fiber. EGO models are not compatible because they use a dedicated structure.

Does the handlebar need to be modified? What if it’s aftermarket?

No modification is required to the original handlebar: it installs using the supplied hardware. Barkbusters declares compatibility only for motorcycles in their original factory configuration, and on a motorcycle that is twenty years old, the handlebar may already have been replaced; in that case, the mounting must be checked before purchase.

Why buy handguards for a twenty-year-old motorcycle?

Precisely because it has twenty. Levers, controls, mirrors, and switchgear for an XL600V or XL650V are no longer available from Honda stock: when they break, you have to look for used parts. A structure that protects them costs less than a successful search.

What exactly is included in the package?

The two heat-treated aluminum bars, clamps, complete hardware, and handlebar counterweights. There are no protective plastic parts: they are the item to pair with.

What is the difference between two attachment points and a single point?

These are two configurations that the manufacturer distinguishes and does not combine. The two attachment points, as in this kit, secure the bar both at the end of the handlebar and to the straight section, and are intended for impact protection. The single attachment point is intended only for protection from wind and the elements.

Are assembly instructions available?

Yes. The official Barkbusters INS-BHG-018-NP instructions are attached to this product page, in the Manufacturer documents section, with installation sequence and warnings.
