Description Barkbusters BHG-062 handguard mounting kit for Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin and X-ADV 750

The BHG-062 is the Barkbusters mounting kit designed around the handlebar geometry of the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin from 2016, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports from 2018, and the X-ADV 750 from 2017 to 2020. It is the aluminum structure that supports the handguards: it protects your hands, levers, and controls from branches, gravel, and low-speed falls, and remains on the bike even when you change the plastics.

It fits both the version with a DCT gearbox and the manual version: the manufacturer lists them together. And as with the entire range, the structure and protective plastics are two separate products: here you are purchasing the structure only, with hardware and handlebar weights.

Protection and use

The Africa Twin is a motorcycle you take where the road ends, and that is where your hands are most exposed: branches, gravel thrown up by the rider ahead, and the stationary fall that happens to everyone when a foot slips while crossing a stream. The two-point mounting is what Barkbusters designed specifically for this purpose: the bar forms a cage around the hand and transfers the impact to the structure instead of the lever. On a touring motorcycle, it is not just an aesthetic detail; it is the difference between continuing your journey and looking for a workshop. The single-point configuration, the other option in the range, is specified by the manufacturer only for protection from wind and weather.

Materials and construction

Heat-treated aluminum structure, a process the manufacturer uses to increase strength and impact absorption. The design is wraparound: it starts at the straight section of the handlebar, curves around the hand, and closes at the end. The clamp is shaped to fit between the cables and lines of the CRF1000L, which is why a bike-specific kit fits where a universal one would not.

Pay attention to the number. This is the code for the CRF1000L. For the CRF1100L Africa Twin, from 2020 onward, the manufacturer specifies code BHG-082.

Installation

Mounts on the original handlebar, with no drilling or modifications to the motorcycle. The stock bar ends must be removed because the structure anchors directly to the handlebar end, and the ones supplied in the kit are used in their place.

Before fully tightening, check that the throttle, front brake, clutch, and engine stop switch operate freely, and that the steering turns from lock to lock without interference. Check the tightening again after the first 50 km.   • Barkbusters LED lights. In addition to being a separate product, the manufacturer states that the LED-001 lights are not compatible with the Honda CRF1000L and CRF1100L Africa Twin.

Who is it recommended for

A chi usa la CRF1000L Africa Twin per quello per cui è nata: viaggi lunghi, sterrati, piste e guadi, dove leve e comandi sono la prima cosa che si rompe in una caduta da fermo.

A chi fa chilometri tutto l anno e vuole poi abbinare plastiche a copertura estesa per l inverno, cambiandole in estate senza toccare la struttura.

A chi ha una X-ADV 750 fra il 2017 e il 2020 e la usa in città: lì il rischio non è il ramo ma lo specchietto dell auto e il ribaltamento in parcheggio.

Non è la scelta giusta per chi pensa di abbinarci le luci LED Barkbusters: su Africa Twin il produttore le dichiara non compatibili.

Le istruzioni ufficiali INS-BHG-062-NP sono allegate a questa scheda.

  1. Verifica che il manubrio sia quello originale e che modello e anno rientrino in tabella.
  2. Rimuovi i paramani originali, se presenti, e i contrappesi di serie: al loro posto vanno quelli forniti nel kit.
  3. Monta il morsetto sulla sezione dritta del manubrio, davanti ai comandi, senza serrare a fondo.
  4. Fissa la barra in alluminio all estremità del manubrio e al morsetto, poi portala in posizione.
  5. Monta le plastiche che hai scelto, allinea tutto e serra.
  6. Verifica il funzionamento di gas, freno anteriore, frizione e interruttore di arresto, e che lo sterzo giri liberamente da fondo a fondo. Ricontrolla il serraggio dopo i primi 50 km.

Frenafiletti di media resistenza su tutti i fissaggi. Il produttore considera il montaggio dei paramani un intervento rilevante per la sicurezza, da affidare a un tecnico se non hai dimestichezza.

What you see is the complete kit: two heat-treated aluminum bars, clamps, hardware, and handlebar counterweights. The clamp is shaped to fit between the cables and hoses of the CRF1000L, which is why this part number is not interchangeable with a universal kit.

Are the protective plastic parts included?

No. Here you purchase only the aluminum structure with the hardware and counterweights. The JET, VPS, STORM, or CARBON plastics are ordered separately, remain interchangeable on the same structure, and can be changed to a different color even years later. The gallery photos show the same kit with three different series.

My model is listed in the table, but the year isn’t: can I still install it?

No. The year ranges in the table are those declared by the manufacturer and are not extended by deduction: the same motorcycle uses a different kit when the handlebar changes. Write to us with the model and year, and we’ll check the correct code before you order.

I have the DCT version: do I need a different kit?

No, it’s the same. The manufacturer explicitly lists both the CRF1000L with DCT transmission and the one with a manual transmission under code BHG-062, because the handlebar and control layout do not change.

Are the handlebar counterweights included?

Yes, the manufacturer states that they are included. The motorcycle's standard bar-end weights must be removed because the structure attaches directly to the end of the handlebar, and the supplied ones are installed in their place.

Does it fit the Africa Twin Adventure Sports?

Yes, from 2018 onward, both DCT and manual transmission, as long as it is the CRF1000L. On the Adventure Sports based on the CRF1100L, the code changes.

I have a CRF1100L Africa Twin: is it the same kit?

No. For the CRF1100L, from 2020 onward, the manufacturer states the code BHG-082. BHG-062 remains the code for the CRF1000L.

And on the X-ADV from 2021?

No. For this code, the manufacturer lists the X-ADV 750 only from 2017 to 2020. For the X-ADV from 2021 onward, there is a dedicated code, BHG-143: write to us and we’ll check availability.

Can I mount Barkbusters LED lights on this kit?

No. The manufacturer states that the LED-001 lights are not compatible with the Honda CRF1000L and CRF1100L Africa Twin. This is a stated limitation, not our own inference: it is better to know this before ordering them together with the kit.

What protective plastics can I mount on this structure?

Four series declared by the manufacturer: JET with a compact profile, VPS with an adjustable deflector, STORM with extended coverage, and CARBON made of carbon fiber. EGO models are not compatible because they use a dedicated structure.

Does the handlebar need to be modified? What if it’s aftermarket?

No modification is required for the original handlebar: it installs using the supplied hardware. Barkbusters states compatibility only for motorcycles in their original factory configuration: with an aftermarket handlebar, the diameter and thicknesses may differ, so the mounting must be verified before purchase.

What exactly is included in the package?

The two heat-treated aluminum bars, clamps, complete hardware, and handlebar counterweights. There are no protective plastic parts: they are the item to pair with.
