Description Barkbusters BHG-123 handguard mounting kit for Honda CB500X, CB400X, and NX500

The BHG-123 is the Barkbusters mounting kit designed around the handlebar geometry of the Honda CB500X from 2019, the CB400X from 2020, and the NX500 from 2024. It is the aluminum frame that supports the handguards: it protects your hands, levers, and controls from branches, gravel, and low-speed falls, and stays on the bike even when you change the plastics.

One code for three different names, because it is the same motorcycle whose designation has changed over time. As with the entire range, the frame and the protective plastics are two separate items: here you are buying the frame only, with the hardware.

Key features

  • Two-point mounting — anchored at the handlebar end plus a clamp on the straight section. This is the configuration the manufacturer specifies for impact protection.
  • Heat-treated aluminum bar, with a wraparound design and natural aluminum finish.
  • Three models, one code — CB500X, CB400X, and NX500.
  • Interchangeable plastics — compatible with JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON, each sold separately.
  • Made in Australia by Rideworx Pty Ltd.

Protection and use

The CB500X and NX500 are everyday motorcycles that often end up on gravel roads and long trips too. In the city, the risk is not a high-speed crash: it is tipping over while stationary in a parking space, bending a lever and mirror and costing a morning at the workshop. Outside the city, it is branches and gravel. The two-point mounting is what Barkbusters designed specifically for this: the bar forms a cage around your hand and transfers the impact to the structure instead of the lever. The single-point configuration, the other setup in the range, is specified by the manufacturer only for protection from wind and weather.

Materials and construction

Heat-treated aluminum frame, a process the manufacturer uses to increase strength and impact absorption. The design is wraparound: it starts at the straight section of the handlebar, curves around the hand, and closes at the end. The clamp is shaped to fit between the cables and hoses of this Honda family.

Honda CB500X from 2019 BHG-123-NP
Honda CB400X from 2020 BHG-123-NP
Honda NX500 from 2024 BHG-123-NP

Compatibility declared by Barkbusters for motorcycles in original factory configuration. Aftermarket handlebars have different diameters and thicknesses: check the mounting before purchasing. Questions about your model? Contact us with the model and year.

If you have an older CB500X, the year matters. The BHG-123 starts from 2019. For earlier model years, the manufacturer specifies different codes: BHG-055 for 2016-2018 and BHG-046 for 2013-2015.

Installation

Mounts on the original handlebar, with no drilling or modifications to the motorcycle. Before fully tightening, check that the throttle, front brake, clutch, and engine stop switch operate freely and that the steering turns from lock to lock without interference. Check the tightening again after the first 50 km.

The complete procedure, handlebar-end preparation, and warnings are provided in the official INS-BHG-123-NP instructions, attached to this product page in the Manufacturer documents section. It is worth reading them before ordering.

What’s included

  • Two heat-treated aluminum bars
  • Clamps for the straight section of the handlebar
  • Complete mounting hardware

What is NOT included

  • Protective plastics. They must be selected and ordered separately from the JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON series. EGO plastics are not compatible with this frame.
  • Handlebar weights. For this code, the manufacturer does not list them among the kit contents, unlike other codes in the range. If you need them, they are a separate Barkbusters item.

Why choose Barkbusters

Barkbusters is a brand of Rideworx Pty Ltd, an Australian company that has designed and manufactured motorcycle handguards since 1984. The range is built around a precise idea: the frame is motorcycle-specific, while the plastics are universal within the system. You buy the right frame once and then choose the protection you need, replacing it if it gets damaged or if your type of use changes, without replacing everything.

Why buy it from Endurrad

Endurrad supplies accessories for touring, adventure, and enduro motorcycles: compatibility checked against the manufacturer’s documentation, official instructions attached to the product page, and pre-purchase assistance if your model is unclear. Free shipping in Italy on orders over €100 and in Europe on orders over €250, 14-day returns, 1-year warranty. See the full Barkbusters range.

Why choose it
  • Protezione dagli impatti dichiarata.
  • Quattro plastiche compatibili. JET, VPS, STORM e CARBON, intercambiabili negli anni sulla stessa struttura.
  • Prodotto in Australia.
Who is it recommended for

Assembly and documents

  4. Fissa la barra in alluminio all estremità del manubrio e al morsetto, poi portala in posizione.

The kit that follows the CB500X through to the NX500

  • Change the motorcycle's name, not the handlebars: one code for three generations.
Only the structure, drawn on this handlebar

Only the structure, drawn on this handlebar

What you see is the complete kit: two heat-treated aluminum bars, the clamps, and the hardware. The protective plastics are a separate item, to be chosen from JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON.

The second point: the clamp on the handlebar

The second point: the clamp on the handlebar

The clamp closes onto the straight section of the handlebar, in front of the controls, and is shaped to fit between the cables and hoses on this Honda family. It is the part that turns the handguard into a cage around your hand: without it, the bar would work as a cantilever supported only at the end.

The first point: the end of the handlebar

The first point: the end of the handlebar

The bar anchors inside the end of the handlebar, where the stock bar end weight is located. For this product code, the manufacturer does not specify replacement bar end weights in the kit: before ordering, read the official instructions attached to the product page to understand how to free the end on your motorcycle.

On the NX500, with your choice of plastics

In the official photo, the kit is mounted on a Honda NX500 with VPS plastics, sold separately. This is how the entire range works: the structure stays on the motorcycle, while the plastics can be chosen from JET, VPS, STORM, and CARBON, replaced over the years, and changed in color without touching the aluminum.

FAQs

For more information, see our FAQ of frequently asked questions.

Are the protective plastic parts included?

No. Here you purchase only the aluminum frame with the hardware. The JET, VPS, STORM, or CARBON plastic parts are ordered separately, remain interchangeable on the same frame, and can be changed to a different color even years later.

My model is listed in the table, but the year isn’t: can I still install it?

No. The years in the table are those stated by the manufacturer and are not extended by deduction: the same motorcycle changes kit when the handlebar changes. For the CB500X, the cutoff is 2019, and it is clear-cut. Write to us with the model and year, and we will verify the correct code.

I have a 2016 CB500X: is this kit suitable?

No. For this code, the manufacturer lists the CB500X from 2019 onward. For earlier model years, the listed codes are different: BHG-046 for 2013-2015 and BHG-055 for 2016-2018. Write to us with the registration year, and we’ll confirm which one you need.

I have an NX500: is it the same kit as the CB500X?

Yes. The NX500 is the direct successor to the CB500X, and the manufacturer lists it under the same code from 2024 onward: the name on the tank changes, not the handlebar geometry.

Are the handlebar counterweights included?

For this code, the manufacturer does not list them among the kit contents, unlike other codes in the range where they are explicitly mentioned. So let’s not assume they are included: the official instructions attached to the product page explain how the handlebar end should be prepared. If you need Barkbusters bar-end weights, they are a catalog item.

What protective plastics can I mount on this structure?

Four series declared by the manufacturer: JET with a compact profile, VPS with an adjustable deflector, STORM with extended coverage, and CARBON made of carbon fiber. EGO models are not compatible because they use a dedicated structure.

Does it also fit the CB400X?

Yes, from 2020 onward. The CB400X shares the handlebar with the CB500X, and the manufacturer lists them under the same code.

Does the handlebar need to be modified? What if it’s aftermarket?

No modification is required for the original handlebar: it installs using the supplied hardware. Barkbusters states compatibility only for motorcycles in their original factory configuration: with an aftermarket handlebar, the diameter and thicknesses may differ, so the mounting must be verified before purchase.

Why is a specific kit needed instead of a universal one?

Because the clamp must fit between the cables, tubing, and electrical blocks of that specific motorcycle without interfering with levers and controls. A universal kit is selected based on the handlebar diameter and remains the right solution when the handlebar is no longer the original one.

What exactly is included in the package?

The two heat-treated aluminum bars, clamps, and complete mounting hardware. Protective plastics are not included: they are the item to pair with it.

What is the difference between two attachment points and a single point?

These are two configurations that the manufacturer distinguishes and does not combine. The two attachment points, as in this kit, secure the bar both at the end of the handlebar and to the straight section, and are intended for impact protection. The single attachment point is intended only for protection from wind and the elements.

Are assembly instructions available?

Yes. The official Barkbusters INS-BHG-123-NP instructions are attached to this product page in the Manufacturer documents section, with the installation sequence and warnings.
