The throttle stays where you leave it, and your right hand can rest. This Kaoko mechanical cruise control replaces the right handlebar end weight: as you open the throttle, tighten the ring with your little finger and the grip maintains the selected opening, even on long stretches of motorway. No electronics, no wiring, and no modifications to the motorcycle.

The kit also fits motorcycles without handguards. It is intended only for liquid-cooled models: the air- and oil-cooled R 1200 GS and R 1200 R use a different Kaoko part number. The R 1250 GS Adventure is not among the models listed by the manufacturer: for that model, and for any special configuration, contact us before ordering.

How it works

The knurled ring screws onto the bar end weight and presses against the throttle grip through a thrust washer. When tightened, it creates the friction that holds the throttle in place; when loosened, the grip moves freely again and closes by itself. It locks the throttle opening; it is not a speed controller: the motorcycle slows down uphill, accelerates downhill, and the device does not disengage automatically when you brake. You can always open and close the throttle by hand, even when the device is engaged.

What you receive and how to install it

The package includes the Kaoko bar end weight with friction ring, the thrust washer, and a 2 mm Allen key. Remove the original right bar end weight, fit the Kaoko one using the original BMW central screw, place the washer between the ring and the grip, and adjust the resistance with the set screw. With the original handguards, the handguard mounts directly to the Kaoko bar end weight.

Do you have Barkbusters handguards on an R 1250 GS, F 750 GS, or F 850 GS? The cruise control is compatible with the Barkbusters BHG-085 mounting kit. All models are in the Kaoko cruise control range.

How does it work in detail

Is it cruise control like the electronic kind in cars?

No. It is a mechanical throttle lock: it maintains the throttle opening you selected, not the speed. The motorcycle slows down uphill, accelerates downhill, and it does not disengage automatically when you brake or pull in the clutch. It is intended for highway and main-road stretches at a constant speed, when road conditions allow it.

How do you turn it on and off?

As you open the throttle, squeeze the ring between your little finger and palm: the ring screws in and creates the friction that holds the grip in position. To disengage it, make the same gesture while closing the throttle. When disengaged, the grip should open and close freely on its own, as if the device were not installed.

Can I still turn off the gas with the device inserted?

Yes. The ring slows the rotation of the throttle but does not lock it: you can always open and close the throttle by hand; the grip simply feels a little stiffer. The manufacturer recommends using it only when road conditions permit and keeping it disengaged in all other situations.

Do I need to modify the motorcycle to install it?

No. Remove the right handlebar counterweight and install the Kaoko one in its place, reusing the original central bolt. It is rarely necessary to move the throttle housing a few millimeters along the handlebar: loosen its screws, slide it, and tighten them again to the torque specified by BMW.

Is it okay if I have the original BMW handguards or Barkbusters?

Yes, with the original BMW handguards, the handguard attaches directly to the Kaoko bar-end weight. On the F 750 GS, F 850 GS, and R 1250 GS, it is also compatible with Barkbusters handguards installed with the BHG-085 kit. It also works on motorcycles without handguards. On the F 900 R, it is designed for use without handguards only.

Does it go on the R 1250 GS Adventure or the R 1300 GS?

The manufacturer does not list it among the models compatible with this code. Before ordering, write to us with the exact model and year of your motorcycle, and we’ll tell you which Kaoko kit you need.
