Description Barkbusters BBZ-001 winter handguards in waterproof fabric

BBZ-001 is the handguard Barkbusters designed for real cold: semi-rigid fabric lined with a waterproof membrane that wraps around your hand and keeps out wind, rain, and snow. It is not a plastic handguard, and it is different from everything else in the range.

The BBZ protects against the elements. For lever protection in a fall, you need a two-point aluminum handguard. The good news is that they are not alternatives: the BBZ can also be fitted over an existing Barkbusters frame, giving you both.

Designed for faired motorcycles

This is what makes it unique. The fabric flexes around the fairing and windscreen at full steering lock, where a rigid handguard would make contact. That is why Barkbusters recommends it for faired sport and touring motorcycles, as well as road, dual-sport, and adventure bikes.

And it is not a soft handlebar-muff cover: the design is flap-resistant and self-supporting, meaning it maintains its shape under wind pressure instead of collapsing onto your hand. The controls remain unobstructed.

Assembly and documents

Le istruzioni ufficiali INS-BBZ-001 sono allegate a questa scheda. Il produttore prevede tre modi di fissaggio, con la relativa minuteria già in confezione.

  1. Guarda com è fatta l estremità del tuo manubrio e scegli il modo di fissaggio: al contrappeso, dentro il manubrio cavo, oppure sopra una struttura Barkbusters già presente.
  2. Monta il paramano destro e il sinistro con la minuteria corrispondente.
  3. Verifica che a fondo corsa dello sterzo il paramano fletta liberamente e non forzi contro carena o parabrezza.
  4. Controlla che la mano entri ed esca senza impedimenti e che gas, freno anteriore, frizione e interruttore di arresto restino liberi.
  5. Ricontrolla il serraggio dopo i primi 50 km.

Il produttore considera il montaggio dei paramani un intervento rilevante per la sicurezza, da affidare a un tecnico se non hai dimestichezza.

Does it protect the lever in a fall?

No. The BBZ is a fabric handguard: it protects against cold, wind, rain, and snow, not impacts. If you’re looking for lever protection in a fall, you need a two-point aluminum handguard, and it’s also possible to combine them because the BBZ mounts over an existing Barkbusters structure.

How do you install it if I don't have any handguards?

Independently, without needing any mounting structure. The manufacturer provides the hardware to attach it to the handlebar counterweight or inside the hollow handlebar: one of the two methods works on almost all motorcycles.

I already have Barkbusters handguards: can I fit it on top?

Yes, and it is the third available mounting method. The package also includes the hardware for mounting it on an existing Barkbusters structure: this way, you keep the aluminum lever guard and add protection from the cold.

Does it flap in the wind like handlebar mitts?

No, and that's the difference compared with soft handlebar mitts. The BBZ has a self-supporting anti-flapping design: under wind pressure, it keeps its shape instead of collapsing onto your hand.

I have a fully faired motorcycle: does the windshield touch when turning the handlebars?

The manufacturer designed it precisely for this: the fabric flexes around the fairing and windshield at full steering lock, instead of exerting force as rigid plastic would. That is why Barkbusters describes it as ideal for fully faired sport bikes and touring motorcycles.

Can I reach the clutch and brake?

Yes. The manufacturer states that the handguard keeps the controls free from interference: the hand can move in and out, and the levers remain accessible.

Is it truly waterproof?

The fabric is lined with a waterproof membrane, so it keeps out rain and snow as well as wind. It is the construction feature that the manufacturer lists first in the description.

Can I remove it in spring and put it back in winter?

Yes, and it’s the most common way to use it. It is secured with screws and can be removed without special tools: many people keep it installed from October to March and remove it for the warmer months.

Is the specific code for my motorcycle required?

No. It is advertised as having universal mounting, and the manufacturer states that it fits almost any handlebar configuration thanks to the three mounting methods provided.

What will I find in the package?

The two fabric handguards and all the hardware for the three mounting methods: to the counterweight, inside the hollow handlebar, and on a Barkbusters structure.

Is it also compatible with heated grips?

Yes, and together they work very well: the heated grips warm the palm, while the BBZ blocks the wind on the back of the hand, where the cold really gets through. The handguard does not interfere with the controls.

How does it differ from a plastic handguard?

The plastic handguard protects against the wind and, if it has two mounting points, protects the lever in a fall; but it lets air in from the sides and does not enclose the hand. The BBZ wraps around the hand and insulates it: it is the product for truly cold weather. It does not protect against impacts, but it can be mounted over an aluminum handguard to have both benefits.
