Description Barkbusters STORM STM-007 full handguards for 6 or 8 mm threaded handlebars

STM-007 is the complete handguard from the STORM series, in the version that screws into the handlebar's internal thread, where the factory-fitted bar end weight is mounted. It requires a 6 or 8 mm internal thread: the kit covers both sizes.

Protects against the elements, not impacts

Barkbusters states this explicitly: this product is designed solely for protection against the elements and NOT for impact protection. There is only one anchor point, at the handlebar end, and the second point that withstands impacts is missing. If you are looking for lever protection in a fall, see the two-point kits specific to your motorcycle.

The Triumph exception

The manufacturer notes that some Triumph models have a 5 mm internal thread instead of 6 or 8 mm. The handguard can still be fitted, but the hole must first be drilled and retapped to 6 mm: this is workshop work, not a garage job. It is worth measuring before ordering.

Installation

Specified torque settings: 10 Nm for M6 hardware and 28 Nm for M8 hardware. Pay attention to the threadlocker: the pre-applied threadlocker on the bolts is intended for one installation only; if you remove them, it must be reapplied. Check the throttle, brake, clutch and engine stop switch before setting off, and recheck the torque after the first 50 km.

Who is it recommended for

A chi ha il manubrio con filetto interno da 6 o 8 mm, cioè la maggior parte delle stradali e delle adventure con contrappeso avvitato.

A chi ha la sezione dritta del manubrio già occupata da comandi e accessori e non ha i 18 mm liberi che servono ai modelli a morsetto.

Non è la scelta giusta per chi cerca protezione della leva in caduta, né per chi ha il manubrio cavo senza filetto: in quel caso serve la STM-005.

Assembly and documents

Procedura dichiarata da Barkbusters nelle istruzioni ufficiali INS-STM-007, allegate a questa scheda.

  1. Svita e rimuovi i contrappesi originali dal filetto interno del manubrio.
  2. Verifica la misura del filetto: 6 o 8 mm. Su alcune Triumph è da 5 mm e va forato e rifilettato a 6, in officina.
  3. Scegli l'adattatore e il bullone della lunghezza corrispondente alla tua filettatura.
  4. Monta il terminale, destro o sinistro secondo il lato, avvitandolo nel filetto interno.
  5. Fissa la barra in alluminio e monta la plastica STORM con la sua sella.
  6. Serra alle coppie indicate: 10 Nm per la viteria M6, 28 Nm per la M8.
  7. Controlla il funzionamento di gas, freno anteriore, frizione e interruttore di arresto prima di partire.
  8. Ricontrolla il serraggio dopo i primi 50 km.

Il frenafiletti preapplicato sui bulloni vale per un solo montaggio: se smonti e rimonti il paramano, riapplica frenafiletti nuovo di media resistenza. Il produttore considera il montaggio dei paramani un intervento rilevante per la sicurezza, da affidare a un tecnico se non hai dimestichezza.

There is only one mounting point, at the end of the handlebar. It provides excellent protection from wind, cold, and rain, which is why it exists. However, Barkbusters expressly states that it is not designed for impact protection: in a fall, the lever is not protected as it would be with a two-point system.

How can I tell if my handlebar is internally threaded?

Unscrew the counterweight and take a look: if it was screwed into a thread inside the handlebar, that is the internal thread required for this handguard. If, instead, the tube is open and smooth, you need the STM-005, and if it is closed by a solid insert, neither end version can be installed.

I have a Triumph: is that okay?

With one explicit clarification from the manufacturer: some Triumph models have a 5 mm internal thread instead of 6 or 8 mm. In that case, the hole must be drilled and re-tapped to 6 mm, which requires workshop work. Check the size before ordering.

What is the difference between STM-007 and STM-005?

The way they attach to the end of the handlebar. The STM-007 screws into the 6 or 8 mm internal thread; the STM-005, on the other hand, uses an expansion lock inside a hollow handlebar, that is, one without a thread. The plastics, frame, and level of protection are identical.

Is the kit complete, or do I need to buy anything else?

Complete: black STORM plastics, seats, aluminum bars, right and left end caps, locking adapters, spacers, and hardware. Fourteen line items in the bill of materials.

Should I remove the counterweights?

Yes: the handguard screws directly into the thread where they were mounted. If you feel more vibration after installation, Barkbusters offers a dedicated bar-end weight, product code B-066, in its catalog.

Is it compatible with both 6 mm and 8 mm threads?

Yes, the kit covers both sizes: the package includes adapters and bolts of different lengths specifically to fit the 6 mm and 8 mm threads.

And compared with the STM-001 and STM-002 clamp versions?

Change the mounting point. The STM-007 works at the handlebar end and leaves the straight section clear; the STM-001 and STM-002, on the other hand, attach with a clamp to the straight section, which requires 18 mm of unobstructed space inward from the controls.

Can I install plastics from another series?

Yes, and the manufacturer itself states this: the STM-003, JET-003, VPS-003, and CARBON BCF-003 plastics are mounted on the same structure. The profile changes, and therefore so does the balance between protection and bulk.

If I remove and reinstall the handguard, is that okay?

One precaution the manufacturer points out: the bolts have pre-applied threadlocker, which is effective for only one installation. If you remove and reinstall the handguard, apply new medium-strength threadlocker.

What are the tightening torques?

10 Nm for M6 screws and 28 Nm for M8. Check the tightening again after the first 50 km.

Is it suitable for winter use on the motorway?

It is its terrain. The STORM plastic is the largest in the range, 275 by 140 mm, and the manufacturer states that it is designed to provide excellent protection from wind and cold. What it does not do is protect in a fall.
