Change the mounting point. The STM-005 fits inside the handlebar end and leaves the straight section clear; the STM-001 and STM-002, on the other hand, attach with a clamp to the straight section and leave the end clear. If your handlebar is crowded with controls, this option is preferable; if the end is closed or you have bar-end weights you want to keep, the clamp is preferable.

Should I remove the counterweights?

Yes: the handguard occupies the end of the handlebar, so the original bar-end weights must be removed. On Hondas, the internal ones must also be removed. If you feel more vibrations after installation, Barkbusters offers a dedicated bar-end weight, part number B-066, listed in the catalog.

Can I install plastics from another series?

Yes, and the manufacturer itself states this: the STM-003, JET-003, VPS-003, and CARBON BCF-003 plastics are mounted on the same structure. The profile changes, and therefore so does the balance between protection and bulk.

Can I adjust the position of the plastic?

Yes, the manufacturer provides two mounting positions for the plastic component on the bar, plus an additional spacer to use when more clearance is needed around the knob.

If I remove and reinstall the handguard, is that okay?

There is one precaution that the manufacturer explicitly points out: the threadlocker factory-applied to the bolts is suitable for only one assembly. If you disassemble and reassemble them, new medium-strength threadlocker must be applied; otherwise, the tightening will not hold.

Is it suitable for winter use on the motorway?

It is its terrain. The STORM plastic is the largest in the range, 275 by 140 mm, and the manufacturer states that it is designed to provide excellent protection from wind and cold. What it does not do is protect in a fall.

The STM-005 is the complete handguard from the STORM series in the version that anchors inside the end of the handlebar, using an expanding locking system. It requires a hollow handlebar: open-ended, without a solid insert or internal thread.

Protects against the elements, not impacts

Barkbusters states this explicitly: this product is designed solely for protection against the elements and NOT for impact protection. There is only one anchor point, at the handlebar end, and the second point that withstands impacts is missing. A note that is especially relevant to Hondas

Many Hondas have an internally threaded bar end weight mounted on a rubber support, in addition to the external one. The manufacturer warns that both must be removed for correct installation, leaving the handlebar genuinely hollow. This note appears only in the instructions and explains why the handguard may seem not to fit on some motorcycles.

Installation

Specified torque values: 10 Nm for the M6 hardware and 28 Nm for the M8. The manufacturer provides two mounting positions for the plastic and an additional spacer to use when more clearance is needed around the grip. Pay attention to the threadlocker: the factory-applied threadlocker is intended for one installation; if you remove it, it must be reapplied. Check the throttle, brake, clutch, and kill switch before setting off, and check the tightness again after the first 50 km.

Before ordering, look inside the handlebar

Hollow, threaded, or closed: the handlebar end determines which of the three single-point STORM codes you need.

Is it still inside the handlebar?

The mounting is not clamp-on: an expanding collet, a conical nut, and a spacer fit inside the handlebar tube and secure the end piece from within. This requires a hollow handlebar, and it is why the handguard does not take up space on the straight section, where the controls are often already crowded.

Single point: what it protects and what it doesn't

There is only one mounting point, at the end of the handlebar. It provides excellent protection from wind, cold, and rain, which is why it exists. However, Barkbusters expressly states that it is not designed for impact protection: in a fall, the lever is not protected as it would be with a two-point system.

The most extensive coverage in the range

275 mm long and 140 mm high: the STORM plastic is the largest in the Barkbusters range. For comparison, the VPS is 250 by 105 and the JET is 245 by 110. It is the handguard for road riding and the cold season.

Four plastics to choose from

On the same structure, the manufacturer declares four different plastics compatible: the standard STORM, the more compact JET, the VPS with adjustable deflector, and the carbon-fiber CARBON. The kit remains the same; the compromise between protection and bulk changes.

Infila pinza, dado conico e distanziale nel tubo e monta il terminale, destro o sinistro secondo il lato.
Orienta il distanziale con lo smusso rivolto verso il manubrio, come indica il disegno.
Fissa la barra in alluminio e monta la plastica STORM con la sua sella, scegliendo fra le due posizioni previste.
Serra alle coppie indicate: 10 Nm per la viteria M6, 28 Nm per la M8.
Controlla il funzionamento di gas, freno anteriore, frizione e interruttore di arresto prima di partire.
Ricontrolla il serraggio dopo i primi 50 km.

Il frenafiletti applicato di fabbrica sui bulloni vale per un solo montaggio: se smonti e rimonti il paramano, riapplica frenafiletti nuovo di media resistenza. Il produttore considera il montaggio dei paramani un intervento rilevante per la sicurezza, da affidare a un tecnico se non hai dimestichezza.

A chi ha un manubrio cavo e vuole il massimo riparo da vento e freddo su strada, in città o in autostrada.

A chi ha la sezione dritta del manubrio già occupata da comandi e accessori e non ha i 18 mm liberi che servono ai modelli a morsetto.

Non è la scelta giusta per chi cerca protezione della leva in caduta, né per chi ha il manubrio filettato internamente o chiuso da un inserto pieno.

Does it protect the lever in a fall?

No. Barkbusters states that the STM-005 is designed solely for protection from the elements and NOT for impact protection: the handguard is anchored only at the handlebar end, without a second mounting point. For lever protection in a fall, two-point models are required.

How can I tell if my handlebar is hollow?

Remove the bar-end weight and look inside: if the end is a smooth, open tube, the handlebar is hollow and this is the correct code. If there is a thread inside, you need the STM-007. If it is closed by a welded solid insert, neither bar-end version will fit.

What internal diameter is needed?

I have a Honda: is there anything I should know?
