The BHG-046 is Barkbusters' mounting kit covering ten models from Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Ural: large touring and dual-sport bikes with the original 22 mm handlebar. It is the aluminum structure that supports the handguards and protects your hands, levers, and controls from branches, gravel, and low-speed falls.

This is not a universal kit; quite the opposite: it is designed around a precise handlebar geometry shared by those ten motorcycles. As with the entire range, the structure and protective plastics are two separate items: here you are buying the structure only, with hardware and handlebar weights.

Varadero, Crosstourer, NC700X, V-Strom, Versys 1000: these are touring motorcycles that cover serious mileage and also end up on gravel tracks and unpaved roads. That is where your hands are most exposed, and on a heavy motorcycle, a stationary fall can happen to anyone. The two-point mounting is what Barkbusters designed specifically for this purpose: the bar forms a cage around your hand and transfers the impact to the structure instead of the lever. The single-point configuration, the other option in the range, is specified by the manufacturer only for protection from wind and weather.

Materials and construction

The structure is made of heat-treated aluminum, a process the manufacturer uses to increase strength and impact-absorption capacity. The design is wraparound: it starts at the straight section of the handlebar, curves around the hand, and closes at the end.

Manufacturer's stated exclusion: not suitable for motorcycles with a sidecar fitted with a windshield.

If you have a Honda CB500X, check the year. Compatibility here ends in 2015. For later model years: BHG-055 for 2016-2018 and BHG-123 from 2019.

Installation

Installs on the original handlebar, with no drilling or modifications to the motorcycle. The stock handlebar weights must be removed because the structure anchors directly at the handlebar ends, and the weights supplied in the kit are used in their place.

Before fully tightening, check that the throttle, front brake, clutch, and kill switch operate freely and that the steering turns from lock to lock without interference. Check the tightness again after the first 50 km. Who is it recommended for

Are the protective plastic parts included?

No. Here you purchase only the aluminum frame with the hardware and counterweights. The JET, VPS, STORM, or CARBON plastics are ordered separately, remain interchangeable on the same frame, and can be changed to a different color even years later.

My model is listed in the table, but the year isn’t: can I still install it?

No. For this code, the intervals are particularly specific to each model and cannot be extended by deduction. Send us the model and registration year, and we’ll verify the correct code before you order.

Does the same kit really fit four different brands?

Yes, and the manufacturer states it. What matters is not the brand but the geometry of the 22 mm handlebar and the space around the controls: the ten listed models are compatible with the same structure and hardware.

Are the handlebar counterweights included?

Yes, the manufacturer states that they are included with this code. The motorcycle's standard bar-end weights must be removed because the structure attaches precisely to the end of the handlebar, and the supplied ones are installed in their place.

I have a Ural with a sidecar: is that okay?

It depends on the sidecar. The manufacturer states that all Ural models from 2007 onward have 22 mm handlebars, but explicitly excludes motorcycles with a sidecar equipped with a windshield: the windshield's clearance causes interference. It is one of the few exclusions spelled out in black and white in the range.

I have a VFR1200X Crosstourer DCT: does it qualify?

No. For this code, the manufacturer lists the Crosstourer only in non-DCT versions and up to 2016. It’s an unusual distinction, because on other models, DCT and manual transmission versions are included together: not here. Write to us and we’ll check the alternative.

I have a 2017 CB500X: is this kit suitable?

No. Under this code, the CB500X is listed for 2013 to 2015. For subsequent model years, the manufacturer lists different codes: BHG-055 for 2016-2018 and BHG-123 from 2019 onward.

I have a DL1000 V-Strom: how can I tell if I have 22 mm handlebars?

The manufacturer lists the DL1000 V-Strom with 22 mm handlebars for model years 2002 to 2019. The diameter is measured on the straight section, near the plate clamps. If you have the DL1000XT with tapered handlebars, the code is different: write to us and we’ll tell you which one.

What protective plastics can I mount on this structure?

Four series declared by the manufacturer: JET with a compact profile, VPS with an adjustable deflector, STORM with extended coverage, and CARBON made of carbon fiber. EGO models are not compatible because they use a dedicated structure.

Does the handlebar need to be modified? What if it’s aftermarket?

No modification is required for the original handlebar: it installs using the supplied hardware. Barkbusters states compatibility only for motorcycles in their original factory configuration: with an aftermarket handlebar, the diameter and thicknesses may differ, so the mounting must be verified before purchase.

What exactly is included in the package?

The two heat-treated aluminum bars, clamps, complete hardware, and handlebar counterweights. There are no protective plastic parts: they are the item to pair with.
